@AnnemarieBridy So, @MichaelEMann, do you have any thoughts on the original WaPo article? I generally defer to climate scientists on matters like these, and have come to respect your take on things like this.

@AnnemarieBridy So on the one hand, this article is discussing a **very** real, very grave, very concerningly likely scenario regarding the forest. On the other hand, the recently elected president Lula isn't going continue the same policies his predecessor had regarding the forest, and from what I have heard from other reports, the forest could be saved or made more resilient via restorative efforts.

I feel like it would have been better to balance this article with *something*
about what can be done than simply implying that it is necessarily too late. We need a path for action alongside the warnings of doom, and obscuring the former while only focusing on the latter is a bad idea.

Really hoping someone sets up a UK railways server, I'd happily donate.

I joined this site a fortnight ago today.

I did not have a clue how it worked, or about its lore and culture.

Now, it seems intuitive - though not because I am adept but because networks and protocols are familiar and practical things.

We use them all the time: www, mobiles, emails, etc.

And this place is structured to encourage calm civility.

It was Twitter which was strange and, in many ways, inhumane - rewarding clicks and rage and vileness.

We just got used to it.

And now we are out.

A groundbreaking decision taken by world govs yesterday gives explicit protection to 54 species of sharks, some of which aren't critically endangered today, but soon would be without help.

This is a win for the planet really, as sharks are a 420M year old keystone ocean species that have survived 4 mass extinction events. Oceans need them to persist. No sharks, no oceans, no us.

As you may have noticed the bot is fully functional on Mastodon, its new home!

You can try it now by adding #BbcMicroBot to your BASIC toot.

It may take up to 24hr to respond while I tune for the fediverse (CWs... visibility... tags vs mentions).

Also video puts load on a community instance - so just use the 🚀 for a screenshot for now.

Since people seem to like the foxes, here's another one from right outside my garden door (my desk is right inside) a couple of years ago. This one was brave enough to just lay right back down again and go to sleep even after it noticed me right inside the door.

So an apparent reason for disabling #Twitter's employee badges is that Elon is afraid some would sabotage the company after the (non-hooman) ultimatum

If he had just acted with a little hoomanity in the first place he wouldn't be in this mess.. :birdsite:

I wonder what's next...

A lot of us moved our blogging to places like Twitter, because it was convenient and easier to be seen.

If this meltdown leads people to going back to their blogs, or at least learning the essential downside of centralization, that will be a positive outcome.
