The spike in usage in Mastodon and the recent announcement by Tumblr, makes ActivityPub at least just as interesting, and actually even more interesting, than any of the blockchains 🤷🏽♂️

@jarbochov One of the reasons I'm asking in multiple places. :)
@cpoliticditto I'm not convinced Post.news will be able to replace Twitter, as it certainly will not with its current business model. *No one* wants to pay micropayments for a Twitter replacement. It's also in beta and has been *very* slowly onboarding people.
At this point Mastodon has a head start and actually has *more* traffic and visibility than Post.news. Outside of people I follow here, I don't think anyone I know IRL from school or home, or online via Discord, has even heard of Post.news, let alone set up an account.
In other news: Tumblr is going to implement ActivityPub at some point, Flickr is considering it as well, and Twitter is very possibly about to be banned from or restricted on a certain app store, heralding yet another influx. The Fediverse could end up growing quite quickly before Post.news even gets out of beta.
A lot of people are asking, "Is the Fediverse doomed to be crushed because of storage capacity needed for instances?"
No.
It is possible to create a P2P content distribution system. We're already seeing some of that with PeerTube.
And my team at #GreatApe are also devising a solution.
@tchambers yay! It may make flickr great again 😁
A recent scoop by Reuters revealed that mobile apps for the U.S. Army and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were integrating software that sends visitor data to a Russian company called Pushwoosh, which claims to be based in the United States.
But that story omitted an important historical detail about Pushwoosh: In 2013, one of its developers admitted to authoring the Pincer Trojan, malware designed to surreptitiously intercept and forward text messages from Android mobile devices. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/11/u-s-govt-apps-bundled-russian-code-with-ties-to-mobile-malware-developer/

NEW: Documents show why Apple pulling its Twitter ads is devastating for Elon Musk: In the first quarter of 2022, Apple was Twitter's top advertiser, accounting for nearly $50M in revenue

@RichPuchalsky @mmasnick Good point tbh.

With the amount of lies/promises this fascist oligarch has made over the years...if anyone believes a word of what will come out from him on what he calls "free speech suppression", then you can sell them a box of rocks!
Metatext (my favorite iOS app for Mastodon) is looking for a new maintainer or organization to take on its maintenance and development. Are you an #iOS dev looking for a new project or an open source advocacy group that wants to see the fediverse healthy and strong? Shoot @metabolist an email at info@metabolist.org if interested!

@RichPuchalsky @mmasnick I am honestly surprised they didn't just pull their advertising altogether and block his number in response to his call.
If I were a CEO, that is exactly what I would do to someone like Musk if he called me about such a thing.
