Unfortunately I have to stop actively working on #Metatext for a while due to health issues. I really wish I could implement Mastodon 4 features and squash every bug, but it's not possible for me to do so right now.
I know the app has become important to a lot people, so I'm open to a new maintainer who can carry on its values of privacy and accessibility taking it over if there's interest and a fit. Email info@metabolist.org if you (or your organization) are interested
Having now been on #Mastodon for 1 month, a few observations:
- Mastodon makes me realize how much the #Twitter algorithm maximized user outrage to boost engagement for profit. Gross. Here, my feed is interesting & supportive.
- There's a culture of kindness - at least so far. It's extremely appealing & should be normalized on & offline.
- Beyond reactions to toots, people share songs, poetry & ask great questions. I can't remember the last time I found social media to be fun.
@dave I don't think there are that many people who are willing to use micropayments on Twitter.
There's also the fact that post.news has only 65,000 or so people in the app actually using it as of the last time I checked, as they are onboarding people from their waiting list quite slowly.
For totally legit reasons, I was sifting through Twitter's front-end code earlier today and noticed this new payment handler named "TwitterBluePaymentFailureFix". The bundle itself has code that deals with Twitter Blue payments through Apple and Google App stores.
I'm not saying it's definitely related, but I wouldn't be suprised if that's why the Birdman is ranting about Apple's 30% fee on in-app purchases.

We've seen this illustrated again & again in recent years: reactionaries can only tear down & destroy. They can't build anything. Selfish, resentful, dull-minded people who define their whole identity around victimhood ... are not built for creativity & adaptability.
There's a certain Twitter migrant who likes Twitter but hates Elon Musk.
For me, I just hate Twitter.
Elon Musk is therefore a useful illustration for why centralization and corporate control over social media is terrible.
But Twitter has always been evil—whether or not Elon Musk runs it.
And post.news is evil for the same reason Twitter is: it's corporate-run centralization of social media.
Some people actually want that because they're not convinced that Twitter was always evil.
@atomicpoet Interesting take, and one I am tempted to agree with, though I suspect post.news is not going to do well in the end.
Who the heck wants Twitter but with micropayments?

@nytpu Same!
Maricopa County, Arizona (Phoenix) says that contrary to some imaginings, no voters were disenfranchised by Election Day tabulator glitches; all had the option to place their completed ballots in a secure box for later tabulation, which is in fact the system used in most Arizona counties. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/11/27/maricopa-county-elections-printer-toner/
It’s so odd to feel so connected to strangers on Mastodon. I feel comforted by the solidarity, common interests, and intelligence. I can barely hold a conversation with trumper family and friends anymore. That includes my 80-something parents. On every trip to see them, as we cross into the north Georgia mountains, I tell my hubby, you’re in trump country now darling.

As you're considering the other new Twitter alternatives, ask yourself if you really want to go to another corporate entity that could end up being just as bad as Twitter and Facebook. Algorithmic sites, by design, reward hate and outrage. You're jumping into another fire.
We have a rare and fleeting chance to build something different right now.

I can't believe I even have to say this, but please do not grant the San Francisco police department the power to kill people using armed robots: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/red-alert-sfpd-want-power-kill-robots
