Overconsumption is a big issue already globally and 'world events' like Black Friday doesn't help a bit..
Fashion influencers are getting more crazy than ever, online ordering and payments can be done with a single click / tab on the screen all for the goal of selling more and more.
I'm not gonna participate in this madness and I hope you also won't or at least buy something locally to support the small stores instead of Bezos with
for example..

Intellectual blindspots are weird. While a number of people I know of have minor, often transient ones, from time to time, I expect to see major ones like this from people who think they've found out how to square a circle with a compass and straightedge, not educated people like Dean.
@DeanBaker13 @joshtpm
@wchr So, what then? Does everybody just switch to LibreOffice on Linux machines? I assume the same holds for Google as well (by all logic, it should). Can people even use Windows anymore given the amount of telemtry data that's sent?
Does the DSK outline alternatives, or is everyone just under an obligation to figure it out?
How will enforcement work out -- that's ... basically every German company, organisation, volunteer organisation, school...
@DeanBaker13 @joshtpm I do think that Musk's ability to buy Twitter in the first place demonstrates a huge problem with having centralized sites like Twitter being run by publicly traded companies, but repealing Section 230 is a terrible idea that would have serious knock-on effects and would probably lead to huge swathes of the modern Internet closing simply due to legal liability, including a huge number of Mastodon instances, blogs, comment sections...
@mmasnick has written extensively on techdirt.com on why Section 230 repeal would cause huge issues.
Observing what some are calling "growing pains" with how Mastodon instances moderate minority voices is reinforcing what free speech advocates like @popehat have preach for years - that it is the ability for minorities to share their perspectives even if that is uncomfortable for the majority which is the most important function of free speech.
I am now receiving reports of child abuse materials (CSAM) surfacing on #Twitter as results from ordinary, nonsexual searches, and that efforts to report such materials to Twitter are either being ignored or receive "does not violate our TOS" responses. Horrific if true.
Going into the 2022 midterm elections, Ds controlled 36 state legislative chambers; Rs controlled 62. Now, Ds control 40; Rs 56. (3 remain uncalled.)
It's the first time a prez's party has picked up state leg seats in the 1st-term midterms since *1934*. https://ballotpedia.org/Election_results,_2022:_State_legislatures
@chemoelectric @georgetakei IIANM a surprisingly large number of people don't realize that they can see Twitter via a normal browser. My mother used to be one of them.
OTOH, Musk not understanding this fact is decidedly more embarrassing since he is supposedly a tech literate person. (We all know he *isn't*, of course, but that's the persona he's been projecting to his fans and the public and large)
@georgetakei I keep recommending: go to the #Apple #AppStore and go to the #Google #PlayStore and #REPORT the #Twitter app.
At the Play store there is a link for an "inappropriate" app. Click it and fill in the checkbox for "hateful or abusive content".
Let's get the app removed!
(And Numskoel doesn't realize you can read his dying bird with your phone's browser? He thinks he has to make a special phone?????)
Musk Twitter garbage
Perhaps lost to Musk here is the fact that, if he forces Twitter to essentially become an alt-platform, Trump will have no reason to use it. He’s already on an alt-platform, Truth Social. The usefulness of Twitter to him was that more people were on it and it was easier to access. No reason for Trump to swap back if the only people who read his tweets are those willing to shell out for MuskPhone
On November 25, at the urging of a far-right troll, Elon Musk banned the @CrimethInc Twitter account.
Musk’s goal in acquiring Twitter had nothing to do with “free speech”—it was a partisan move to silence opposition, paving the way for fascist violence.

The U.S. Supreme Court justices are the only judges in the country who are not governed by a code of ethics. This needs to change.
Here are three reforms that the Court can make now to shore up its legitimacy: https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/supreme-court-ethics-reform
@Kingsrook It's Doug Ford. My father knows relatively little about Canadian politics because he lives in the US and is busy, and even *he* doesn't like Doug Ford.
In short: I am not surprised.
@Pat @Romaq Snow (the asshole stirring up this drama) was doing this before Musk bought Twitter, and some of the admins I've seen have a beef with Freemo have been having it since the days when Gab joined --- and subsequently left --- the Fediverse.
In short, this is stuff that predates the current influx of users by some time. As I have said, my hope is that this sort of drama will have less impact over time as more people come in. Whether that actually happens remains to be seen.
