@edwardchampion @catelaz

You are right. Let's help it along.

Sick of #twitter ?

Just go to the Playstore, search for Twitter. Don't reinstall it, but rate it with one star. Then select the three dots in the top right, with 'Flag As Inappropriate'. The next screen asks why you think it is inappropriate. Mark it as 'Contains Hate Speech', and submit.

Google does take these reports seriously. It's worth the effort.

As a historian I am well aware that every historical moment is sui generis: no other identical combination of people, politics, technology, economy, education, etc. has ever or will ever exist in any one place.
But it is striking how so many problems of so many people in so many societies at so many times come down to too much power and money in the hands of the few.

@Loukas There are instances that have that. My current instance runs a forked version of Mastodon with quote tweets.

It also has a 65,536 character limit and Markdown support, both of which I *really* like.

Other Fediverse applications besides Mastodon (Pleroma, Soapbox, Akkoma, Misskey, etc.) have features beyond those of Mastodon.

@gpowerf @Romaq
I may be misreading what you said, but I am assuming you are saying we should "go back to a simpler time". Let me know if I am wrong here.

There's a huge gulf of possibilities between the painful, unsustainable normal and abandoning modernity, and I am pretty convinced the best outcome is between those two and probably way closer to the former than the latter. In particular, giving up modern medicine or science is neither necessary nor a remotely good idea.

I celebrate that #Taiwan held a free and fair election where people had the day off to vote, votes were openly and efficiently counted, and losing candidates admitted defeat without questioning the results.

Truly a democratic system countries around the world can learn from.

@atomicpoet You might want to consider the United Federation of Instances as an interesting new dynamic in this conversation

@wolfgangcramer I'm curious which big accounts are saying that at the moment. I deleted my Twitter account recently (never used it that much to be honest) and while I have disabled that popup prompt Twitter shows logged-out users, I try to avoid the site unless I have to.

@jeff
To be fair to Jeff, he just got here in October. Maybe you should give him and other new arrivals a bit of time to get comfortable before asking that they find their place? I've been here since 2019 and I'm only now thinking of migrating one of my handles to a self-hosted instance.
Besides, it's not like mastodon.social allows new signups anymore...

Just getting started on “Architecture - from prehistory to climate emergency” and it’s got a great expression of why fossil fuels are so addictive: our oil use is equivalent in energy terms to every person on the planet having 50 personal servants.

#introduction I am a public historian and archaeologist at Salem State University, exploring material life in the 17th century Atlantic World, mostly from the perspective on non-Puritan northern New England. I also write about #witchcraft and #countermagic in #Salem and elsewhere. I am a former museum director, dean, and vice provost. Always wondered what it was like to be part of a Great Migration, now I get to find out, with thanks to @lizcovart @jmadelman & @kawulf #histodons

@tchambers @blaine My Bundesland (=state) Baden-Württemberg bawü.social/directory is not open for everyone, but it isn't state entities only either. Universities, Student association, libraries and other organizations are on that instance. There is a large range, what the state government and the federal government can build besides a press release hub with comment functions.

@MaRY1Fem @filmcritic It's *very* weird, to put it mildly.

There was one woman at that place where Mom was staying in Florida who was a QAnon believer. She seemed so nice and calm until she started talking about tunnels across the sea for smuggling children and how Russia was invading to "cleanse" Ukraine of "Satanism".

I said "seemed" for a reason. She used to teach in a public school, and when talking about it she said she "taught all of the little n's", where n's is a certain racial slur I am **not** going to write. Sometime in mid-2020 her former students found her Facebook page and they were ... let's just understate it and say ... disappointed in what they found there. Long story short, they unfriended her en masse.

This is what can happen when one person owns and control *our* words.

@MaRY1Fem @filmcritic
Very sorry to hear that. I guess I'm extremely lucky in that regard. My mother tends liberal, my father and older sister tend moderate conservative, and I'm best described as a cross between a left-libertarian, social democrat, and liberal with a dash of pro-2A thrown in for good measure. All of us despise Trump and in the case of my father and sister, it ultimately led to both of them leaving the GOP for good.

On the other hand my mother (retired ER doctor) saw a lot of weirdness in the carriage driving community, and when I went with her to Florida, I got to see some of it too.

Scientists discover the first evidence that #marine conservation helps to reduce #climate change.

Marine protected areas act as a safeguard for oceans, seas, and estuaries. A group of experts describes how marine protected areas support ecological and social adaptation to #climatechange and help in the sequestration of carbon in a study that was recently published in the journal One Earth.

My career as a disabled artist who makes art about my experiences as a disabled trans person can be summed up via an excerpt from the last grant rejection letter I received:

“…while the members of the selection panel felt your art was evocative, accomplished, and beautiful, we collectively felt the subject matter of disability would disturb and upset art patrons. Your work was ultimately rejected because we felt it wouldn’t resonate with the public.”

…My reality.

@MaRY1Fem @filmcritic Somehow I was lucky to not have that experience of being called that for disliking Trump, but then again where I am isn't exactly Trump country, and people on the Discord servers I talked to, in my experience, tended to be a lot more sane even when conservative than those my mother ran into on the fowl site...

@filmcritic Agreed. It's really quite amazing how close things got to apocalyptic levels of insanity.
