The fact that for 4 years this anti-American psycho narcisist had the launch codes to their nuclear arsenal is probably the most terrifying thought possible. #Trump
Elon (Twitter) has been recommending newly restored account of neo-Nazi (Anglin) to everyday users - Elon is now Twitter. So I think it's fair to consider every Twitter recommendation to be a recommendation from Elon. - https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/12/03/twitter-antisemitism-violence-jan-6/
Cardea, our little black fox of a dog, died in her sleep last night. She was 14+, had been with us since she was 9 weeks. We collected her at Christmas she has gone to sleep close to Christmas. She is our last dog. We have no more now. Samson went on ahead of her a few months ago. I feel rather sick and shaken, especially as we were not at home to be with her for her last breath. Here she is smelling the almond blossoms. Rest in peace, little girl.
chatcontrol propaganda factcheck
Recently the European Commission published a short article which is basically blatant propaganda for #chatcontrol. Almost every sentence is wrong or misleading in some way. I wrote a blog post detailing what's wrong with their article: https://maxim.tips/chatcontrol-lies/
The original article by the Commission (also linked & fully cited in the blog post): https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/news/detection-systems-online-child-sexual-abuse-are-reliable-and-save-lives-2022-12-01_en

@freemo @timorl@social.wuatek.is @timorl It's definitely something I've considered, and it's likely I will!

Agreed.
Granted, there *are* still many, many people who aren't moving because they haven't figured out exactly where to and how to move yet, or they use Twitter for art promotion/business/etc and haven't figured out quite how to replace it yet, or because they had a bad experience joining a badly-run instance at some point in the past, or various other reasons that will resolve with time --- but the number of people, particularly Twitter-famous ones, who are not merely uncertain about but **actively hostile** to people relocating is larger than I thought it would be.
One of the things that concerned me about my mother's relationship with Twitter was that, for a long time, she took the site seriously as a representative sample of American society at large, rather than the warped, strange, and surprisingly small platform it is. Only in the past month with Musk's mishandling of the site and her leaving in disgust has she realized just how incorrect that view was. If she ever joins the Fediverse, I think I will be her guide.
Profanity
@atomicpoet @pvonhellermannn If I do give into that temptation, I'm going to either post it on my site and post a link here, or I'm going to use the wonderful power of Markdown my instance has and just post the entry here.
I have other things to do as well, however. This week is finals week.
Profanity
I am tempted to write a lengthy blog entry for my site just to vent about this stupid, performative fuckwit and what she said.
@timorl@social.wuatek.is @freemo @timorl Awesome!! I might very well set up an instance at some point!
Was sent a Twitter link where a Mastodon post of mine got shared.
I'll now respond to a counter-argument:
1. In the case of Twitter, media ownership literally is like land ownership because:
2. Elon owns the server farm that hosts your tweets
3. "The Cloud" is not some ethereal thing, it's physical
4. Elon Musk has hegemony because he has physical access to Twitter -- you do not
5. You're dismantling nothing by staying on Twitter
See screenshot of argument to my post.
@timorl@social.wuatek.is @freemo @timorl Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely look into it.
Quick question: does it have Markdown support?
@timorl @timorl@social.wuatek.is @freemo I am considering setting up an instance — probably something smaller and more scalable than Mastodon — for myself and friends.
If I do go ahead with that, and it will be quite a while before I do, I will still keep my handle here. I'll probably migrate that mstdn.io handle of mine to the new instance instead, because that other place is a bit ... off.
@KingShawn @d_in_canada@mstdn.social Incidentally, and as for how I think crime and violence should be addressed: I think the biggest factor is poverty and economic disparity, and building a reliable social safety net and addressing those disparities would remove the primary reason for those things in the US.
For the kind of mass shooting that makes the news, I think a combination of enforcing red flag laws and mental health access would be a major help, along with some other policies, potentially including well crafted gun restrictions. Unfortunately, our current governor here seems more intent on passing performative gun laws in defiance of legal precedent and case law that get struck down in court and blaming Discord and Twitch for the Buffalo shootings than acknowledging local and state government failures or the neglect of upstate — and the Republican that ran against her this year would of course have been *even worse*.
@KingShawn @d_in_canada@mstdn.social The two metro areas I have lived that I know best (Albany and Rochester) haven't really had a mass shooting of the kind that makes the news. Those cities do have massive amounts of handgun violence and homicides in their poorer neighborhoods, though, which has gone unaddressed for decades (for reasons I could go on an angry tirade about for hours, but which involve local government corruption and decline, state government corruption and indifference, and more than a little racism) but I don't think we've had a mass shooting in my area in my memory.
I currently live where I grew up, a small town of 10,000 or so. The closest thing this area ever had to a mass shooting was a planned shooting, well over a decade ago, at the high school right outside my window here, by some would-be Columbine copycat. Fortunately for everyone else, the would be shooter chickened out and ended his own life in a bathroom stall before he could carry out his plan.
Welp, this is the most fucked up and concerning story I've seen about a news service in a long while.
Who the heck thought having an AI curate a news service was a good idea?
Just to be clear: the AI isn't writing these stories, but it is choosing them from what is out there and putting them on the front page of the MSN web portal

When teaching the postgraduate students at ANU's School of Cybernetics this year, I introduced them to the idea of "goal perversion" - turning a benevolent AI goal into something rather more malevolent. There was a great paper about this in Nature in February. Scary stuff.
And now, this:
Which is a step-by-step tutorial on how do perform goal perversion with #chatGPT.
