@trinsec @freemo @cy@mstdn.io two of the reasons why qoto is one of my favorite instances is the science focus and the 65,000+ character limit.

Random thought: Could markdown support in #Mastodon be a good thing?

ML2 boosted

@mathlover @nivex there may be a couple instances doing that manually, but can't remember a single example where it was a problem, at least in my experience.

fediblock is usually a good tag to follow iirc from my admin days since it would give early warning of instances to block before the cesspool arrives to my server... not too much an issue though as a single user instance, again following just a subset of good folks helps maintaining a decent feed and I don't get randoms from other people...

ML2 boosted

@mathlover @nivex no reason to, unless you spam of course :D

I've been on single user instances since 2019 iirc ? no issues at all, except maybe the discoverability of new profiles since my federated timeline is just me... but I follow enough interesting folks that they boost new people in my feed anyway...

For those of you who did not know otherwise because Mastodon is your only social media outlet, I and Krissy have bought a church and are refurbishing it. Here is some of the new framing for the balconies. Also, no, we're not starting a cult. Why does everyone assume that?

My tldr; for new Mastodon users:

Toots = Tweets
Boosts = Retweets
Stars = Hearts

Home feed is who you follow (think Twitter).

Local feed is everyone on your instance (i.e. server)

Federated is posts from people on *other* instances followed by at least one person on *your* instance.

You don't have to use Local or Federated, but they can be helpful for finding people to follow.

You can follow/interact with anyone on any instance by using their full handle:

Expert opinion on whether ruzzia is able to keep it's aircrafts flying under sanctions (very unlikely for longer then a year and only through salvaging stolen aircrafts)

The Fediverse is really different some the established social medias like twitter.

Twitter is basically all about people trying to promote themselves, promote their brand or similar.

Fediverse is not about that - it is really about community, and the amount of people supporting each other emotionally, finance or just being a great person towards each other.

There is no such place that can compare to this, take care of it and each other

Before joining Mastodon had you participated or were active on BBS (dial-up) or forums (vBulletin style) in the past?

Boosts are appreciated for better sample sizes.

Just joined looking for an alternative to the other social media sites. Screw the narcissistic billionaires.
I like among other things. And I'll occasionally post about as that's important to me.

@atomicpoet The point about losing a profile when changing servers is valid, but:

- The problem has in fact been solved already in a different Fediverse project ( https://zotlabs.org/page/zot/specs+zot6+home ), but the implementations for various reason have seen less adoption than ActivityPub/LitePub implementations

- The other example they cite (email) for the same problem already points out the reason why people generally don't have much of an issue dealing with this problem: They are used to it.

@rysiek That thing has a big ton of resources and nothing to show for it. It's vaporware pure and simple.

Meanwhile, look at what @Gargron and @dansup have been able to do with their projects.

Just a reminder that Twitter perceives the Fediverse as a threat, and their project Blue Sky is actively spreading FUD about ActivityPub on their website. blueskyweb.xyz/blog/3-6-2022-a

Since this blog post was released, I've seen blue checks repeat these talking points.

I've seen them write, "The Fediverse could disappear tomorrow!"—as if one site has more persistence than thousands.

Or that if one instance crashes, the whole Fediverse follows.

It's all FUD, of course—a way to keep people on Twitter.
