A debunk of a crappy Guardian article
From my account the birdsite. Reposted here in one toot, and edited slightly for clarity and format.
[Here](https://t.co/LP3q4bjYvO) is a crappy Guardian article from 2021 on extremism and open source software. I'm debunking it here.
Problem 1: Weasel words about proprietary vs. open-source software. This paragraph is sandwiched between one on alt-right money and one on the Unabomber:
> Like Bachelier, Smith eschews so-called proprietary software – like MacOS or Microsoft Word – and communications tools like Facebook or Twitter, built and controlled by Silicon Valley firms. Instead, Smith is an advocate for so-called “open source software” – the kind that makes it possible to use, copy, redistribute and modify software legally. And recently, he has been promoting communications platforms that might help extremists to operate beyond the reach of censorship – and even the law.
There is some talk later about FOSS, but it is mostly about the culture and politics of the movement. I'm going to move onto the other basic factual errors in this article, as I am not well-read on this one issue myself.
Problem 2:
> Smith has lately been pushing users in the direction of decentralized, resilient social media platforms in the so-called “fediverse”, a network of independent social media sites that communicate with one another, and allow people to interact across different sites. This could allow far-right activists to operate in ways that make them very difficult to shut down.
A lot of far-right people who get involved with this seem to think that by simply implementing ActivityPub on their site, they are decentralizing it. This isn't true: the original site can still be taken down just as easily.
Far-right people are dumb, but unfortunately, so is the author of this article.
Problem 3:
> The technical details are perhaps less important than the practical effect: no one has authority over these platforms: no one owns them. While governments and users can place pressure on the big social media companies to ban problematic users or communities, for better or worse, no one can stop anyone creating their own servers or peer-to-peer networks.
> These technologies, then, are effectively uncensorable. According to a report by Emmi Bevensee, the co-founder of research consultancy Rebellious Data and the social media monitoring tool SMAT, extremists have been advocating, and even developing them, for years.
More misunderstandings here. Just as with sites on the Internet, no one person owns Fediverse, but any one instance is owned by someone. If governments want to go after someone for something illegal, they can go after that instance's owner.
Problem 4:
> This opens the way for extremists to propagandize and organize on platforms that are beyond the reach of legal authorities and tech giants alike. After the far right-friendly social media site Gab encountered hosting problems and app store bans, it rebuilt itself on Mastodon’s software, despite determined opposition from the platform’s creators and users.
> Beyond Gab’s ambiguous place in the fediverse...
The author wrote this in March 2021.
Gab defederated from the Fediverse in early 2020, after the majority of the Fediverse, servers and users alike, blocked them.
How on earth did the author miss this? Anyone on the Fediverse knows this, and there was some press as well. Did the author simply not talk to anyone on the Fediverse *and* forget to even search Google?
In conclusion, this is a sloppy article with severe factual errors that could have been avoided if the author had done enough research.
I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been retracted at this point.
Just have a glance on https://mastodon.technology/about/more
It listed qoto.org in the suspended list because of "choosing to federate with fascist instances."
LOL
Technically speaking, each new instance could be fascist instances, unless you see and verify it, so I guess in this case, what you need/want is a whitelist, not a blacklist.
So in defense of qoto, I'd say no one can represent me, and my opinion (including Chinese governments and other companies, that's why I deleted Weibo in 2014 and now moved from Twitter to mastodon, after Musk purchased twitter). If there is a fascist instance, I have to see it in my eye and block it with my own hand. It's much different from admins "helping" me block it, especially without notifying me.
WOW. Yeah I've been on mastadon for like only five days now but I'm already flabbergasted at the world that should have been... https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#Overview
Like literally how did we all agree to just NOT have interoperable social networks??? Looking at the activity pub docs makes it clear how ridiculously easy that would have been. You want my content? Just GET my outbox. Want to send me something? Just POST to my inbox. The server can be anything you want, just format your messages in this (VERY INTUITIVE!) way. It's so simple it's STUPID.
I'm very new to all of this, so I'll admit that there's a lot I don't know, but what is painfully obvious right now is how, yet again, the tendrils of Capitalism have fundamentally altered the STRUCTURE of the Internet to make it less open, less empowering and generally WORSE for most users. However, what's also becoming clear is that it does not have to be that way, and being here is in some small way, bringing about that better possible future.
More and more #ClimateJustice groups and activists are joining the #Fediverse and they have more instances available to join than ever before:

I was all like "ha ha ha, I'm 11 and I'm gonna show these dipshits in here what's what" (and I was a VERY spicy and opinionated child so I knew what was what)
and then I was like "oh, they can shut me off forever with the push of a button?"
I'm pretty sure I had my first Thoughts about moderation philosophy when I got banned from a forum on Prodigy due to trolling at age 11.
I actually remember being fairly shocked at the entire concept that I could be banned and have zero recourse! it was unsettling.
this also kiiinda makes perfect sense for me too though, because the mutability of information is a Deep Concept for me, it played a starring role in the first dawning of my awareness of mortality at age 5.
Did Putin ever engage seriously in peace talks with #Ukraine? To me it looks more like he uses it to stall, in order to regroup his wreck of an army.

Hello! From today, I will gradually introduce Vietnamese users on Fediverse. Hope 🇻🇳 will find their compatriots easier. You can also DM me to refer people you know.

So, I just learned something new. The #fediverse is not just connected #mastodon instances, but actually consists of several different software platforms, all connecting via the same federating protocol! I had seen references to things like #peertube and #nextcloud, but assumed they were different platforms running on different protocols, but it turns out they're all part of the same fediverse, unified by #ActivityPub. Amazing!
Hi @freemo it's Friday and, as you requested, I remind you that #QOTO lacks a #Privacy policy.
Please, do not under-estimate the issue as many QOTO's users are European citizens and, as far as I can see here https://dns-lookup.com/qoto.org several services from the US are connected (DNS from Amazon, and mail from Google) while using QOTO.
Data storage, as far as I can see https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=ptr%3a51.178.91.220&run=toolpage is still in OVH, but I'd guess that you need an explicit consent for these stuff anyway.
