How to migrate from one Mastodon server to another without losing followers:
1. Sign up on new server
2. On NEW server: Go to Account -> Moving FROM another account
3. Enter old account's handle
4. On OLD server: Go to Account -> Moving TO another account
5. Enter new account's handle and submit
H1: There are distinct pulses of Twitter-to-Mastodon migration driven by events in Twitter’s history.
H2: Later cohorts of users will have lower familiarity + commitment to FOSS values + projects than earlier cohorts.
H3: New users will default to joining a general instance first and then micro-migrate to a more specific instance later.
H4: Greater circulation of folk documentation for using Fediverse affordances will attract and retain more new user activity.
Basically, news orgs will need to break the habit of reporting stuff that happens on Twitter as news.
If enough of them manage to do so, that would actually be a real improvement: they would have to go back to hunting news closer to its source, rather than just waiting to have it spoon-fed by The Algorithm.
Dear #TwitterMigration folks, an important tip on #privacy on the fediverse:
There is none.
This is a public medium; please treat it as such. Just as you have no privacy on Twitter (Elon Musk can read all your DMs), you have no privacy on the instance you’re on (your administrators can read all your posts).
You can set the visibility of a post but that’s a viewing suggestion, not a privacy guarantee.
Think of your posts as postcards, not sealed letters, and you should be fine.

> Here it is: Twitter engineers were told today to *print out* their last 30 to 60 days of code, so they could show it to Elon Musk himself.
>
> Then they were told wait, no, actually, please shred all that code you just printed out. https://twitter.com/CaseyNewton/status/1586127052767318016
And here's a well known Twitter employee posing with said code https://twitter.com/leahculver/status/1586145696163373056

These two do a good job of breaking down why NFTs are bad. They're long, but detailed.
With today's developments at Twitter, we have some new faces at QOTO. If you are one of them, welcome! Please take a minute to familiarise yourself with the [rules](https://qoto.org/about/more#rules).
I'm a fluid dynamicist and a volunteer moderator here. Mostly this just means I spend some time deleting spammers, but I also deal with reports of rules violations. If you're considering reporting another user, please read [this post](https://qoto.org/@khird/108194488065404744) for a description of how users from different instances are subject to different rules.
If you have questions, ask away! We have a genuinely helpful community here and it's likely someone will be able to point you in the right direction.
> CEO Parag Agrawal, chief financial officer Ned Segal, and Vijaya Gadde, head of legal policy, trust, and safety, were all fired, according to the people. Sean Edgett, the company’s general counsel, was also pushed out, one of the people said. The top executives were hastily shuttled from the building, the people said.

My advice to anybody coming here from Twitter to escape the Musk purchase:
This is not Twitter. Take some time to feel out the vibe, follow the examples of people already on here.
Be mindful of others and use content warnings. Caption your pictures. Don't be a tool.
This is not a walled garden. The site you first sign up to may just be training wheels. You might find another that suits your interests better, no problem. Mastodon.social isn't for everybody and that's fine.
