@atomicpoet Yep, we gotta keep reminding that: Mastodon is no more the #Fediverse, than AOL was the Internet back in the day. Mastodon is one of many software apps that talk a common language, so instead of needing giant corporate servers costing billions, the cost of computing is shared by smaller, privately owned servers that can't be burned to the ground by people like Elon Musk. It's going to all be wired together fairly well , as the web eventually was. So enjoy the ride. I know I will.

Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing the creator of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko (@Gargron). We talked about how crazy the past few weeks have been, why the site was built to resist the kind of takeover that Twitter has seen, and what he makes of Elon's tweet poking fun at Mastodon: wired.com/story/the-man-behind-mastodon-eugen-rochko-built-it-for-this-moment/

I have been informed that until we buy a house I am disallowed from using a tube amp so the neighbors don't think we're assholes.

It's time to buy one of them newfangled modeler floorboards. Anyone have strong opinions on the Helix vs. Fractal FM-9?

Disturbing news from Iran

Iran Votes to Execute Protesters, Says Rebels Need 'Hard Lesson

"On Tuesday, parliament did just that, voting to impose the death penalty on all protesters in custody as a "hard lesson" for all rebels. The majority in favor of the penalty was considerable, 227 out of the 290 total members, matching the number of lawmakers who signed the letter."

Hold the line, Iran!

Actual critical security info if you use Twitter and 2FA

@War_Kittens
10/10 would NOT recommend Google 2FA

Actual critical security info if you use Twitter and 2FA

With 2FA being borked you have two options IF you're still logged in.

— Go in to your settings > security > 2FA > backup codes and write those down in a safe place.

— Switch to using an authentication app, which currently works but do we have faith that it will continue to do so?

This is such a fucking disaster. The software I supported in the early '00s was a trash fire that dealt with ACH transactions and we never borked anything this badly.

Huh…so Michael Moore got it right. Some good points here, I think, about how the Democratic Party communicates with voters. theguardian.com/us-news/2022/n

Is it just me, or did that annoying prompt that Twitter has if you browse without being logged in go away all of a sudden?
I'm using the Android version of Brave Browser, if that's helpful.

@laprice @DataDrivenMD yep, you trust cdc.gov? Then trust an account that is at cdc.gov. My proposal for news institutions and others is here: newsletter.danhon.com/archive/

If you want to delete all your old Twitter DMs (which I think is a good idea even if Twitter might retain copies of them somewhere), and also your historical likes, RTs, and any tweets you don’t want to keep, I made a Twitter app for that.
It’s called Semiphemeral and it’s pretty easy to use. I posted instructions for how to do it twitter.com/semiphemeral/statu

And after a brief lecture about culture and all that, the executive tells me, "All right, I get your point -- but if this is what I can expect from the Fediverse, I just don't know what to *not* expect."

That, right there, tell you about how corporations and the Fediverse.

So my big autistic furry dev friend makes his presentation -- absolutely kills it. Pretty much rolls out a compelling case for his software.

But I'm looking at the executive, he's frozen in disbelief.

After the presentation is over, we make our goodbyes.

45 minutes later, I get a call from the executive. And he tells me, "It's cool. I like it. It does everything I need -- but the Fediverse now scares me."

"But you told me that you'd respect the culture," I said (Contd.)

Something that happened 2 weeks ago:

An executive I know wanted to specific Fediverse software for a corporate intranet. I happened to know the guy who made it.

So I said to him, "All right, if you go this way, you have to understand that the Fediverse has its own culture and you have to respect that."

He agreed -- so I set up a meeting.

Right when the meeting started, the dev -- who is a big autistic furry -- walked into the office in his fursuit, and made his presentation. (Contd.)

Precedents like the German government running a Mastodon server are important beyond the obvious reasons. They reinforce the urgency of serious public funding for open code.

If we treated open code as part of the essential infrastructure of the 21st century and funded it at billions of USD/EUR as opposed to tiny grants here and there, the "fediverse" model of interconnected, self-governing communities would become the norm, not the exception.

I'm happy to say that I've now onboarded another iOS developer for our app, and we are set on making another update to the app as soon as possible. I've also onboarded the first batch of new moderators for this server.
