"I think that the singular evil of our time is prejudice. It is from this evil that all other evils grow and multiply. In almost everything I've written, there is a thread of this: a man's seemingly palpable need to dislike someone other than himself."

Hooooooo boy. Student spouting misinformation about Covid vaccines in their microbiology homework. Makes me want to fail them from the class (this student should NOT become a nurse without some re-education, oy). I won't, of course, but I'll send them a message with my concerns, for what good it will do. There are times when I hate the Internet.

This is your daily reminder that free speech is not a synonym for hate speech.

Hate speech is the anti-free speech, weaponised speech intended to intimidate and silence others. People who call hate speech "free speech" do not support or protect the speech of others.

When you use free speech as a euphemism for hate speech, you help them spread the idea that free speech is bad into popular culture, which is the first step in dismantling it.

Call hate speech what it is. :ablobcatcoffee:

@fyrfli @tchambers @krnlkule

It was the best platform I found, and I looked at all of them. For many reasons. Mastodon is a great goto product for onboarding users and new admins, but there will soon be a rich landscape of tools that serve a wide variety of needs, tastes and use-cases. I want a highly extensible platform to plow those fields while adding some value "on the side" of existing networks like Masto.

@Ted_Cville @duaneaubin @mjf_pro @Lady_Star_Gem I'm not too worried about that. It's not just users who are deserting Twitter, it's advertisers. The more of us leave for saner pastures, the more Elon's advertising revenue declines.

@atomicpoet It probably didn't help that before this, universities like Texas A&M U. shut down their journalism departments in favor of communications departments. Comms feels a lot more like advertising and propaganda (shaping the message) than journalism.

Twitter took journalisim, commoditized it and turnied it into a mouthpeice of the the media companies. None of these entities actually seek for good coverage or stories (hom
pefully that is obvious at this point), they really only care about generating profit. Twitter was exactly the tool to focus the spotlight on them in order to generate traffic.

Twitter was never good for information exchange. The radical change in the platforms management, operation, and content in just the past month has driven that point very hard.

@bettyboo Blue Sky has been around since 2019. IMO, it's vaporware.

Why? Because people with a *lot* less money have built protocols and apps that do the same thing. You can use them now. And they have an actual community that builds and uses them.

After 4 years, I'm out of patience with Blue Sky.

I don't agree with all of Eve Fairbanks points, but what a great article about the demise of Twitter and its devastating effect on modern journalism.

Won't lie. Seeing Twitter die fills me with jubilation.

People really should understand how toxic that Blue Check was not just on journalism but on public discourse itself. wired.com/story/musk-denial-tr

There are people on this platform who want no politics.
We didn’t move over from Twitter to talk about kittens everyday.
We needed a place to carry on our work. To carry on fighting injustice, racism, misogyny, antisemitism and anti-LGBTQ hate. Because these things are important no matter what platform we are using. That was the whole point of our #twittermigration
We don’t have the privilege to be quiet.

@lightweight Ugh. Thanks. I guess.

Did you hear about the MS Office 365 data leak back in September, due to a misconfigured server? We had a new wave of phishing emails weeks afterwards. They were copies of old emails from our employees. Boss freaked out. The solution proposed by our IT vendor: filter the phishing emails coming in. 🤦‍♀️

I've been pointing out for more than a year that phishing emails have increased since our switch from a self-hosted mail server. I'm being ignored. 🤷‍♀️

@dudleysaunders @atzanteol "disinformation" as a category is protected speech. So removing 230 wouldn't change anything on that front... OTHER THAN making it MORE DIFFICULT for websites to remove disinfo because of the risk of liability associated with *knowledge*. Without 230 the incentive is for sites to stop looking at their own websites and to take a hands off approach.

You've been lied to about what 230 does.

If you want Mastodon to succeed, instead of posting bad things about Twitter on Mastodon, post good things about Mastodon on Twitter.

I love how we threw billions at making AI that can drive, realized AI can’t drive a car, then asked ourselves “okay, let’s see what other important decisions we can leave to AI”.
