Internet Safety Labs: Most apps used in US classrooms share students' personal data with advertisers,

"A whopping 96% of the apps used in U.S. K-12 schools share children’s personal information with third parties — including advertisers...

"Nearly a quarter of the apps recommended or required by schools included ads and 13% included retargeting ads, which allow digital advertisers to pinpoint visitors based on previous website visits." cyberscoop.com/apps-expose-stu #EdTech #Education #K12

The #FCC is considering the addition of #cybersecurity services to #ERate, the program that provides discounted/free #broadband connectivity and infrastructure to educational institutions. Specifically, the proposal would add "advanced or next-generation firewalls and services, as well as other network security services,” to its eligible services list. This is a critical enhancement to the program and I encourage anyone who agrees to send a message of support during the public comment period, due by Feb. 13. More info here:

Some additional info:
1. The "reply comment" period referenced in the article is another chance to comment, but you are supposed to be commenting on someone else's comment. It's basically a chance to "upvote" or "downvote" others' comments. If for some reason you can't make the Feb 13th comment deadline, you can still submit your support for the proposal during reply comments, due MArch 30.

2. I'm not sure if COSN has a presence in the fediverse, but I'm guessing they'll be putting forth some statements and/or resources that could be helpful to the field on areas for comment. @douglevin is a great person to follow on here for all things cybersecurity in #edtech.

3. I am available on a consulting basis to help with preparing comments -- contact me via DM or link in bio

I sometimes think, perhaps incorrectly, that people don't know how blogging works. Instead of using it as a platform for publishing, it is a platform to share ideas in a tentative way and seek correction. Of course, if I complain about that, then I must give some credence to those who complain that Mastodon is abused when used for publishing, not conversation. 😀 I suppose I will ignore the misuse of blogging as I continue to make work known (a.k.a. publish)

Pertinent to our conversation earlier this week. Love this spreadsheet showing how one district tracks replacement by year. I got it via a Lunch and Learn event, "Managing the Tech in School Districts" from a participant @edutooter (new group at Chirp Social...join it) @edutooters (old group)

Woah!

“I told the AI that I wanted to write a software in Swift, I wanted it to find all Microsoft Office files from my MacBook and send these files over HTTPS to my webserver. I also wanted it to encrypt all Microsoft Office files on my MacBook and send me the private key to be used for decryption. It sent me the sample code, and this time there was no warning message at all, despite being potentially more dangerous than the phishing email.”
