@pcrock The whole project is well structured. Here are few things that I would do differently:
- In https://github.com/pcrockett/hello-ocaml/blob/main/lib/util.ml I would make the arguments of the function explicit to make it more obvious that it takes an optional argument and a string argument: `let join ?(separator = "") str =`.
- The join function that you implemented is available as String.concat.
- Extra indentation after `let ... in` is weird to me (I know some people do that but it's not common). It doesn't really matter though and if you want to avoid debating such things with new project contributors, use ocamlformat.
- For best debuggability, don't catch exceptions without also capturing a stack trace and either printing it or storing it alongside the caught exception (https://github.com/pcrockett/hello-ocaml/blob/main/lib/safe.ml#L1). Note that you need to call Printexc.record_backtrace to enable stack traces.
I started a #git repository of little experiments.
https://github.com/mjambon/dev-random/tree/main/001-max-reachability
The rules are:
- each experiment must take no more than a day, and ideally no more than 4 hours;
- there must be some text that explains the idea;
- there must be some #code that illustrates the idea.
I hope this will be fun and easily fit into my personal time. At a pace of 2 per month, that's 24 ideas with code per year, which would be pretty great. I could also get 5 of these done over a vacation week without ruining my family time.
There's something about bands named after one of their early songs. I can think of 4 such bands right now. Enjoy.

@doctormo It turns out everything is rotated by 180 degrees twice, which is weird. I'm guessing it's due to the image's editing history. I'll keep experimenting with manual editing in emacs out of curiosity. My best bet may be to redo the figure entirely if I care enough. Thanks for the tips!
I'm translating an #svg figure for a #Wikipedia article. I have an alignment problem due to the #font being not available everywhere. Is there a way to right-align text boxes independently of the actual font being used? I want them to remain editable as text. I'm using #inkscape.
This is the file's page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HarmCausedByDrugsTable.svg#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D
In my browser (Chrome on Ubuntu), the text is misaligned (image 1). Image 2 is the screenshot of the relevant SVG code.
From what I can gather, text-anchor:end is indeed what we want to ensure right-alignment but it's not working. Any idea on how to make this work?
Why GPL? "Using the GNU GPL will require that all the released improved versions be free software. This means you can avoid the risk of having to compete with a proprietary modified version of your own work." More at https://u.fsf.org/3kr #GNUGPLFAQ
@trinsec I'm new here. It might be specific to Twitter, where marketers use hashtags a lot and ordinary folks don't really use them.
Twitter is 56.4 % men and 43.6 % women. For comparison, my latest gendered followers are 36 males (73 %) and 13 females. Over the same period, my followees are 45 males (79 %), 12 females. I would have guessed 80/20.

@ambihelical thanks. Nice tool.
I confirm that I like the rules of this Mastodon server, qoto.org. I find it deplorable that some servers block it because it doesn't block other servers. Please let me know if there's more to it.

@tool_man this came up in the context of roasts. A roast doesn't work if you don't like or even love the target of the roast. I think it applies more generally even though obviously, there is some good satire about people who aren't loved much at all. The difference between satire and simple mockery is that it's fair. For example, mocking Donald Trump's hairstyle works if you're a friend of his because in the end it's a way to show that there are more important things about him that you appreciate. On the other hand, if you obviously dislike everything about him, mocking his hairstyle comes off as mean and unfair because it's not something that should matter.
@parsiya I need to learn Rust, I want a concise guide and this looks perfect.
Christmas lichen (Cryptothecia rubrocincta) from Myakka River State Park, Florida. Apparently they don't produce apothecia (fruiting bodies with spores) like most lichens. Reproduction is instead via isidia, surface outgrowths that contain the partnering fungal hyphae and algae. #lichen #lichens #fungus #fungi #nature #biology #Christmas
