This is it. Last day of work before a long break. This is a much bigger deal than it sounds to those who don't know me so well: my employer took advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to try and make an example of me for resisting their ludicrous demands (50% pay cuts, unpaid overtime, etc.)

Had they succeeded, the timing would have been such that my wife's immigration to this country would have been affected, and due to some key licensing offices being closed for the pandemic, I wouldn't have been able to get another job for some months.

But I fought back, I survived, I'm here, and they look at me with fear in their eyes. It's weird, these people have financial and contractual coercive power over me (sorry kids, wages for survival is a coercive deal) yet apparently they're so scared of me that they'll only even CONTACT me through the one person there who I actually trust.

But after today, it will be over. A month of recuperation. And then I'll be there afterward with nothing to lose, every British License Permit™ I need to not get my wife taken away by government jackboot thugs, and a mountain of documentary evidence of their wrongdoings.

2020 has set a new record for the worst year of my life, and that takes some doing. But annoyingly for someone so reluctant to acknowledge the power of struggle, it has made me much, much stronger and more capable.

I'm going to enjoy my rest, and my turn. I earned this.
@mur2501 The USA, she's been here for three years already, this is just a renewal!

@brother
I don't think it's hard to emigrate from USA to UK compared to Asia/Africa to Europe

@mur2501 That's because economics are for weak-willed plebeians, we moved for love! Believe me, had we had a wider choice of countries, we likely wouldn't have chosen this one.
@mur2501 Of the available options, it was the only one that met our criteria.
@mur2501 Her final citizenship here in 2023, followed by us either leaving for mainland Europe (somehow, thanks Brexit) or trying to get our two dearest and closest companions over FROM the mainland. Depends what's easier at the time, the political landscape of Europe changes rapidly these days.

But one day, I swear, the four of us will live overlooking a warm and peaceful sea.
