@stux this is the among the reason people here hated Obama and came to like Trump especially Nigerians, with Trump you knew consequences already because he said it, so Nigerians, Kenyans, Ugandans and others were not willing to dream of America of Trump, people came to like that, with Obama you're caught off-guard and deported.

@JonathanMBR It's sad in both ways...

Personally I HATE the fact "people" can deny other "people" to set foot on land of the Earth.. :amaze:

Like anyone else decides where I can and cannot go? Pff..! Challenge accepted!

Be it republican or democratic, America is a shithole

@maperal @mur2501 @stux
Thank God Trump never got second term in office, the guy loved to divide you...the faulty with Biden is he not warning people prior to action, so that they can seek asylums elsewhere.

@maperal @mur2501 @stux @JonathanMBR South America is a continent. North America is a continent. "America" is not a continent, and is also the colloquial term people from the USA use for their country. There's no reason to police Americans' speech for referring to themselves this way because there is no ambiguity (and because every culture has the right to name themselves): America is the US, North America is a continent, South America is a continent and the term for the contiguous land mass made up of North and South America is "The Americas" because they're separate continents specifically.

I'm not going to start referring to myself as USian, that's stupid.

@wiggles
Well, that's what your teachers taught you but, we know different concepts. We name "estadounidenses" to people who are USA citicens. Wanna fight over concepts? Sounds kindda pointless.
@JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501

@maperal @wiggles @JonathanMBR @mur2501

Does it even matter :blobcatgiggle:

Soooo often people call the Netherlands "Holland".. :mortyderp: :blobcatderpy:

It's totally wrong but okay 😇

@stux
It matters in a pollitical way. The other countries have been demolished by the USA government for decades so, yes, it matters. It is a matter of visibility and dignity.
@wiggles @JonathanMBR @mur2501

@maperal @stux @JonathanMBR @mur2501 I don't go around telling people from other countries that they use the wrong term in their native language to refer to their cultural group. I'm an American and that's the word we chose and use in our language. Live with it.
@maperal @JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501 got it, you just hate Americans and the US. I'm just talking to a bigot. Makes sense you wouldn't allow us to exist. I'm not some hyphenated American, either. If I'm not American I'm nothing. Fuck you.

@wiggles
No, i don't hate us citicens, just awful and square minded people (most of them living in that stolen territory).
@JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501

@wiggles @stux @mur2501 @maperal

You know the government and people are two different things, you know I'm not responsible of what my Kenyan government troops does in Somalia of raping young women there....I'm totally out of that control.

@JonathanMBR @wiggles @stux @mur2501

I know most people are not represented by their government, but a vast majority are, specially in those countries that are proud of being "democratic countries" so...

Anyway, how we call things may differ in Spanish and English, however, "América" is known as the second greatest Continent of the World. You can look for it, in Spanish, and, of course, in English is a bit different:

es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Am%C3%A9

@maperal @wiggles @stux @mur2501
From what I understand from the article, America has a total land area of 42, 549,000Km² making it the second biggest land mass, so from America then came North and South America.

@JonathanMBR @maperal @stux @mur2501 geologically the continents sit on different cratons iirc

Of course I have no problem with someone from South America calling themselves "American" in contrast to Eurasian. But to be upset at US citizens calling themselves American is so petty. Or to ask us to refer to ourselves only as US citizens, as though the government in Washington defines us?

I swear, sometimes it feels like the only people who isn't allowed to have a heritage or a cultural identity of their own is European descended North Americans. It's like, because someone in my ancestry decided to sail to a new continent seven or eight generations ago, our heritage must forever be tainted, we're colonizers, we're not allowed to refer to ourselves by the name of the continent on which we were born, we have no homeland.

Suddenly it's like ethnonationalism is the predominant belief system and it's aimed, in post colonial societies, at denying the existence and identities of those descended from Europeans especially if they dare to reject a European or Colonial identity.

Fuck all that. I'm American. My heritage is American. My culture is American. I'm ethnically American and my children -- despite not sharing my race -- will be American too. If you don't know what country I mean, what part of the world, use the brain the Lord gave you, look at the context clues, and stop trying to control other peoples' speech. End of rant.

@wiggles @JonathanMBR @mur2501 @maperal

Welll... to be honest.... I almost don't have any I guess.. I even don't like it since its another thing for deviding people into groups (i hate that)

When people are devided in "colors" that part is already racist with me

No "white, black, green, blue" people but just people

@stux @wiggles @JonathanMBR @mur2501 @maperal look you have a culture. There's no universal wipepo culture, sure, because wipepo aren't a singular unified bloc, as much as the racist left would have everyone think. Even in the US there's a different culture between Montana, New York, and Alabama... So how could you expect all Americans who happen to have pale skin to have the same culture as say someone from Germany? Saying white people don't have a culture and that they're all the same is no different than saying that all black people have the same culture which is patently untrue and just as racist.

@CuluraChimera @stux @JonathanMBR @maperal @mur2501

oh yeah, if you take it literally you’re exactly right. Most people, when they say “white people have no culture,” are actually saying “mainstream American culture has no value,” it’s a phrase with an idiomatic meaning rather than really a literal, direct meaning. At least, that’s how it usually comes off, to me.

Even in the US there’s a different culture between Montana, New York, and Alabama

👏

Saying white people don’t have a culture and that they’re all the same is no different than saying that all black people have the same culture which is patently untrue and just as racist.

👏 I couldn’t agree more.

@wiggles @JonathanMBR @maperal @mur2501 @stux if that's what they mean then force them to say that. Don't let these lying racists get away with their bs Motte and Bailey word games. You know they're saying this because they want to shift what is an acceptable mainstream thought to people who have white skin literally have no culture and only steal it from others. It's a racist frame game that I'm done letting get by without challenge.

@CuluraChimera @JonathanMBR @maperal @mur2501 @stux

if that’s what they mean then force them to say that

well, I misunderstood where you were coming from originally, but that’s why I responded originally to your ‘whitepipo have no culture’ comment. I didn’t realize it was tongue-in-cheek. I was going to hold you to it, because

It’s a racist frame game that I’m done letting get by without challenge.

@wiggles @JonathanMBR @maperal @mur2501 @stux I said that at work ironically when someone started going all critical theory during a meeting, half the people unironically agreed, my boss was like 'that's literally impossible' lmao.

@JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501 @maperal I’ve never been more disappointed at a YouTube link not taking me to Never Gonna Give You Up

@Maya @JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501 @maperal

If you read the article you linked you’ll see that América consists of two continents and translates in English (if you change es to en in the URL) to “the Americas”

The Americas (also collectively called America)[5][6][7] is a landmass comprising the totality of North and South America

Geologically North and South America are separate continents (image from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continent )

and anyway the context in this thread was someone saying that people from the US shouldn’t be allowed to call themselves Americans which is just silly, obviously there’re contexts where they might want to use a more specific term, but in most contexts ‘American’ in English is unambiguous (in one direction or the other).

It’d also be silly to tell people from South America that they can’t call themselves American, too, in certain contexts. But usually when referring to membership on the continent it makes sense to specify North or South America, and from a geological standpoint there’s two continents.

@JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501 @maperal

I have mixed feelings with the video... lots of "love", in English, from the country with the most agressions to the whole world. The song is beautiful, utopic... I would like to hear it in all the languages that have been damaged by the US Government.

@maperal @JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501 you can call us whatever you want I'm languages besides English, I'm only interested in pushing back against you telling me what I'm allowed to call myself and my people in my native language because that's bullshit, you don't get to do that
@maperal @JonathanMBR @stux @mur2501 no, that's only part of it, I'm also ethnically American. And it's not your choice if you're not American.
