Here is some dusty first-level dotfiles in my cluttered home:

~/.mplayer ~/.mplayer2 ~/.xombrero ~/.conkeror.mozdev.org ~/.surf ~/.pulse-cookie → Apparently I used pulseaudio at some point on this system? ~/.android → Dark Times ~/.zcompcache → thanks zsh ~/.viminfz.tmp → thanks vim but wtf is this for? ~/.dvdcss → Nice cursed shit ~/.thumbnails → Notto dis shitto again ~/.displayrc → :shrug: ~/.kde4 → Oh wow ~/.gnome ~/.gnome2 ~/.gnome2_private ~/.gtk-boomarks ~/.gtkrc-2.0 → stop it, get some help ~/.Trash ~/.nvidia-settings-rc → *Three Days Grace Voice* Goodbye, goodbye ~/.mosaicpid & ~/.mosaic-hot.html{,.backup} → Yup, this is from NCSA Mosaic ~/.techniclauncher ~/.ftblauncher ~/.bitcoin → Ah yeah, probably from the time where I tried this major shit and eternally tagged it as peak garbage against humanity ~/.adobe ~/.macromedia ~/.appdata/Adobe ~/.aMule 😀️

Normal dotfiles:

find -maxdepth 1 -name '.*' | wc -l 329

XDG .config thing:

$ ls .config | wc -l 200

But is it less of a mess? No. Hell no, see pic attached.

@meeper @lanodan it's bloated trash, that's why. On my machine, gtk's file chooser uses it to store config like current default sorting order - it's garbage.
@meeper @lanodan on one hand, I'm glad people went elsewhere during the fallout of GTK+3 but on the other hand, they mostly went Qt. Which is also bloat (albeit a slightly saner one). :shiro_gross:

Why didn't they go Tk, Motif or FLTK?! :shiro_grumpy:
@GNUxeava @meeper @takao musl.

User Interface Library? Uuh, whatever is in Plan9. And the thing in Haiku seems interesting to look at but too C++ for me.
@GNUxeava @meeper @takao I don't like having a gorilla chase me across the jungle when I asked for a banana.
@allison @GNUxeava @meeper @takao zig is small enough that it could probably be reimplemented against something like qbe instead.
@lanodan @GNUxeava @meeper @takao I'm waiting for the language to stabilize for this very reason, so that there isn't just one canonical implementation but an actual ecosystem like you see with C compilers
@GNUxeava @allison @lanodan @takao The rust community is pretty passionate ngl, evangelism aside It's kinda cute
@GNUxeava @allison @lanodan @takao people being like Imma create my new alternative to the standard utilities!
@GNUxeava @allison @lanodan @takao on the other hand we have some Ruby folk: "All software is political" (Alright I probably shouldn't tread there)
