A question for the techies, Am I correct in thinking that facebook app can collect info on what you do on the other apps you have on your mobile phone ?
A bit of a keylogger thing ?

@stannard I believe it can collect “device information”, which includes GPS data (when explicitly authorised), battery data cell tower data.
If you’re unsure, just delete Facebook 😉

I usually browse to it, but they have a link to the UK census on the FB front page, So am I being paranoid or am I misunderstanding FB ethics. Thanks for confirming what I thought.

You don't really need gps data to determine you are in UK, IP addresses and the addresses your phone or internet accesses to would also be in UK as well as your Facebook friends would also be mostly in UK

@mur2501 @alan
Since I became twitchy, I tend to use proton vpn,
Facebook however is almost essential here as so many people use it. If you want to know anything, Post it to the local group and answers come thick and fast.

@mur2501 @stannard The same here. The only thing stopping me from ditching WhatsApp at the moment (which I’d love to do) is the fact that my shift from work have a group there.

Whilst most of the discussion is smut and high levels of inappropriate, some of the stuff shared is useful and it’s for that reason that I’m stuck with WhatsApp.

I’m sure if I ditched it, I could still get the important stuff via email but I’d miss out on general updates and tidbits.

Similar situation here, We have a family whatsapp group, a street group and a community group, All of which I should stay with. On facebook there is a good linux group, a joomla group and a few other groups I would not like to lose contact with.

Recently installed Jami, Nice app, I know ONE other person using it. I cam to mastodon so I didnt have to talk to myself !!

@stannard @mur2501 When I was looking for Facebook alternatives I came across Gab. I set up an account and was impressed with the UI and the service features.

But then I saw the type of person and the type of conversations being had over there, so I deleted my account within 15 minutes of creating it!!

@alan @mur2501
My only thoughts about Gab, and I went there as well, If you support free speech, as I do, Then I feel you have to allow it for all, even if it goes against everything you believe in.
Like TV , You can turn it off. or block in this case.
The Boss has summoned me to cut the grass, ( it just keeps growing, even in the north )
Take care both, Thanks for the chat.

@stannard @mur2501 I’m not sure the worry was about proving he was in the UK. Unless I misunderstood, he was concerned that Facebook could see his answers to the census.
IP addresses aren’t very specific and at worst, link someone to a local area or town. In the case of a mobile data connection, you’re usually placed in a city somewhere in the UK.

@alan @mur2501
That was it Alan. I wondered why facebook would put in a link

@stannard @mur2501 I definitely wouldn’t use the link via Facebook.

Me and @Malgosia deleted our Facebook accounts several years ago and it was incredibly liberating. We realised that we maintain contact with those we really care about and most “friends” on Facebook are just people you know, knew, think you know or think you knew 😁

There’s still email, good old SMS and if you don’t like WhatsApp, Signal messenger is a fairly well-adopted secure instant messenger.

Just get everyone over here!
