One very nice example of smart play comes from Hongkong itself.
Britain transffered HongKong to China in 1997. China didn't in anyway started to mingle into the inside working of HongKong atleast until 2010.
Why give a decade of freedom to HongKong ?? :blobcatgooglyshrug:

@mur2501 @stux @strawberryfieldsforever They promised five decades, but discovered that nobody cared in any way that mattered and got impatient. It still didn't take off for real until Xi and his imperial dreams.

@clacke
Don't know about what their dreams are, but atleast something we know certainly about is that when HongKong was given to China in 1997, this tiny piece of land was alone making 22% of GDP of the mainland. In just a decade this 22% shrank to hardly 2% not cause HongKong lost business but China made it's other cities (like Shanghai, Xinjiang, etc) the new HongKong

@mur2501 @stux @strawberryfieldsforever Yes, that is a good point. The city's leverage isn't what it used to be.

It's still "Corporate China's ATM" in terms of foreign direct investment, but we'll see for how long.
