@MoiraEve

If you knew the grief newcomers suffered last year in the mass Birdsite migration, you'd wonder why "It's for the best" wasn't substituted for "Go f$%@ yourselves!" 😂

It was surreal! Unbelievable! Incredible! Beyond belief! 🤪

Thankfully the Content Warning (CW) Mafia have got lost, leaving normal people to join @Mastodon in peace & enhance the experience... 😁

@AnthonyFStevens I always thought the CW thing was a bit silly, certainly an annoyance. Glad its use is on the decline.

@MoiraEve

Agreed 100%! However, in 2019 apparently #Mastodon became a war zone because of CW's! 😳

There was a standoff between its special interest group early adopters, & Mastodon's developers/instance owners.

This is when it was reiterated that CW's were down to the individual, but the special interest groups wouldn't yield.

They created several external "Housekeeping" blogs with unofficial rules & etiquettes & literally bullied all newcomers to comply! 🙄

Thankfully they've disappeared.

@MoiraEve @AnthonyFStevens psychologytoday.com/us/blog/wo Trigger warnings have always been kind of dubious, and science tends to find that people tend to underestimate their own resilience.

@olives @MoiraEve

I recall seeing several of these points being made when I first joined Mastodon & a particular case of a Sociology student was cited.

During a college class, the emotive subject of child abuse was tackled, which triggered a student who'd suffered this as a child.

The CW Mafia claimed this is why CW's are vital. However it was countered that the greater importance was the student requiring help to finally deal with this lasting trauma, not more ways to bury it, & I agreed. 🙏🏾

@AnthonyFStevens People can be susceptible to seizures if they have photosensitive epilepsy; that might be a reason to use CW. Probably not very common to include such an image online. @olives

@MoiraEve @olives

Granted, but to be fair, I don't even know which images would cause a seizure, & I'm pretty sure I speak for 90%+ of people who use social media?

Is the answer creating a specialist Social Media platform for people with disabilities? OR would this be seen as discriminatory? 🤔

The issue I find is why do some people with these disabilities, want the vast majority to blunt their Social Media experience to cater for the issues a tiny minority may or may not have?

@MoiraEve @olives

Thanks for the gift! 🙏🏾

What a weird case! 😳

However, I draw your attention to this section here & also to the fact, the man who made the attack was a part of Trump's MAGA cult! The same ones behind #Jan6 & other far right atrocities.

Question: Which is more concerning? The flashing image, or the reasons & people behind the crime?

@AnthonyFStevens Article says: John Rayne Rivello, 29, at his home in Salisbury, Md, sent Eichenwald a tweet w/ a blinding strobe light. Mr. Eichenwald, who has epilepsy, immediately suffered a seizure. FBI arrested Rivello and charged him with criminal cyberstalking with the intent to kill or cause bodily harm. @olives

@AnthonyFStevens NYT article states this as a "unique case', as in--very unusual and not something we should design counter-systems for. @olives

@AnthonyFStevens People w/ disabilities aren't asking for this via Content Warnings. @olives

@MoiraEve @olives

They are you know!

In 2019 the earliest #Mastodon adopters were the Trans Community who viewed it as a safe space. They insisted everything was CW'd as they felt marginalised & offended by everything

HOWEVER Black Trans people wanted a separate space for themselves because they suffered from racism in addition, BUT whites disagreed & it kicked off between the 2 groups!

The Blacks reasoned the whites showed the same indifference to them as non-Trans, so war broke out! 😂

@MoiraEve @olives

By all accounts, #Mastodon had an interesting & curious beginning. I was left agog when being told about the platform wars where every marginalised minority wanted special dispensations for themselves on Mastodon, to the detriment on others. It was crazy by all accounts! 🤷🏾‍♂️

I shouldn't have laughed, but I couldn't help it, because it all sounded so surreal.

Uncompromising anger was another thing I noticed, where no one wanted to yield an inch to anyone else...
