Lots of Fediverse Admins are making it VERY clear they have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the protocol works and that's VERY worrying....
If you don't even understand how something works, how can you even begin to admin an instance properly?
There's definitely a legitimate reason to defederate from the BlueSky bridge. You may not trust corporations and that's PERFECTLY FINE!
But don't disguise it as some sort "opt-in only stance" because if you're a legit Fediverse admin, you know the Fediverse as a whole is opt-out by design.
Either you know that and are misrepresenting the truth to dogpile on a dev unnecessarily or you don't know that and running an instance is irresponsible of you.....😬yikes...
@BeAware I don't know about anyone else but the issue I have with Bluesky isn't that it's run by a company per se.
The issue I have with Bluesky is that it's another case of people parachuting in to try to "save everyone".
They're also so out of touch they think regurgitating QAnon language (without really thinking a whole lot about whether it makes sense) is "policy".
They also promise it will become decentralized at some point in the future. It isn't currently. Also, this sort of "behind closed doors" development is a red flag.
When marketing it, they throw a load of crypto jargon at you, although I suppose it's a Jack Dorsey production, so this makes sense.
@olives I had addressed this in a previous toot, but when the dev said it'd be bi-directional, I assumed that they'd respect a Toot's privacy options set in their software, maybe that was naive of me but it seems like he's trying to make it as seemless and full featured as straight AP federation.
@BeAware An issue someone specifically raised about the *bridge* (not Bluesky itself, although maybe, someone doesn't trust them either) was that it might be in a position to MITM private or semi-private content.
I think people should already be wary of the privacy of content, particularly when it's going out to so many servers, but that is another possible factor.
