Question from a soccer newbie. When does stuff happen? Do they just kick around the ball the whole time?

@ZachWeinersmith A friend of mine is a fan of most sports, but doesn't get soccer. He was watching a game once where the announcer said one team had an "insurmountable" lead. The score was 1-0.

Unless it was a game where goal difference was needed (i.e. one team needs to win by 2 or more, being 0-1 puts you in a position of needing to score 3) no announcer would say 1-0 is an insurmountable lead. 1-0 is just one mistake or good opponent play away from a tie.
