I hate advertisements so much.
This is the main reason I don't have cable. I couldn't wrap my brain around the concept of paying for content full of ads.

I paid for youTube premium but I'm about to give up on that too since you may skip the inserted ads there are still all of the sponsors. And I can't be mad at creators for wanting to make some money but I really need to escape these ads.

Because ads *work* -- most people assume they don't but they do. They change you.

@futurebird I think it’s worth remembering here that “work” is a spectrum, comprising everything from actively helpful and mutually beneficial to manipulative and just out to suck you dry. At some level, not allowing yourself to be affected by any advertizing would mean cutting yourself off from all suggestions of any sort.

But yeah, it often can be very manipulative, and there’s no need to have advertizing jammed into every single piece of media.

@kechpaja

I do think there is a line between "asking people to buy or support your thing" and "flooding the zone with your name and logo to etch your brad into people's brains"

It's that intentional effort to "imprint" me that gets my hackles up. Because I know even if I resent it... it can still work.

@futurebird @kechpaja Aside from the effectiveness, it's the flooding that annoys me. It's hard to get anything done under the constant firehose of ads. Web search has becoming drastically less useful in the last few years.

There's also a line between people talking about their thing on their own feeds and companies paying to staple ads to your eyeballs. The lack of the latter is what makes Mastodon so much nicer than corporate social media.
