It's interesting how many sources around the Internet claim that the term "Drink the Kool-Aid" (as in unwise groupthink) refers to San Francisco and LSD. Or to the novel "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test."

It does not. It refers to the Jonestown Massacre of
1978 in Guyana, where almost 1000 followers of Jim Jones voluntarily (or in some cases, involuntarily) committed mass suicide by drinking Kool-Aid laced with cyanide.

@lauren

Indeed. But iirc, Kool-Aid wasn't even the brand they poisoned, but Flavor-Aid. 😬

@likelyjanlukas True, but good luck finding many contemporary sources that got that detail right. And nobody ever says, "Drink the Flavor-Aid." Not even once, I suspect.

@lauren @likelyjanlukas

The Fla-Vor-Aid folks never tried to correct the record, to my knowledge. I—rather, my mom—tried to pull the switcheroo a couple of times when I was a kid. I'm sure it was cheaper. I wonder if that's why Jones went for it.

@lauren @harmonygritz @likelyjanlukas I assume it was some kind of E.T. / M&Ms situation where they couldn't land a product placement deal.
