Protip:

When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,

"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes

I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."

(Please boost) Hey is there anyone on fedi that currently or has ever in the past worked as a librarian? Could you comment
1. An average day at work
2. Education requirements and what school is like
3. Average pay
4. Bonus: experiences with being autistic/neurodiverse, chronically ill or disabled in any way.

I’m sick of struggling to find work that accommodates my disabilities, I want stability but not at the cost of my well-being.

TIL: has different characters for the lower case Greek mu (u+03bc) and the "micro" sign (u+00b5).

@GreatBigTable Yeah, from that diagram it certainly looks like @htdrake shouldn't be seeing these toots.

I've occasionally been seeing posts from people that I do not follow, and that are not labeled as boosts, on my Home timeline. I thought that wasn't supposed to happen?

@rythur There's *something* to be said for capitalism creating competitive incentive to efficiently produce desired products, but it does seem like an awful lot of the effort goes into manipulating the desire through advertising. That includes both getting people to want things they might not otherwise want and convincing them to buy from you and not a competitor.

@trinsec @mooncube, as suggested in @FediFollows's directory. Apparently their server doesn't federate with qoto because qoto federates with some other abusive servers.

Now it looks like I am "subscribed" to them. We'll see if their next post shows up in my feed.

@trinsec Hmm. I tried subscribing to an account of someone on a server that doesn't federate with qoto, but the subscribe button is grayed out.

I understand what it means to FOLLOW someone, but what does it mean to SUBSCRIBE to them (by clicking on the little RSS logo)?

@trinsec @MightyHumbleBumble ... and go ahead and ask questions -- there are plenty of friendly people here to help!

When does a joke become a dad joke?

When it's full groan.

When I joined #mastodon, I just wanted an open-source #twitter clone.

I got more than that. Subtle design differences made for healthier conversations in ways I wasn't expecting.

Here's a blog post to try to capture those differences and why they matter. scott.mn/2022/10/29/twitter_fe

I couldn't find a good reference diagram of the relationships between types, so a while ago I made one.

1. Won Fury of Dracula.
2. Mystery Rummy with @htdrake
3. Was able to get same-day delivery on a new cable modem -- and even get it working!

We've been playing Fury of Dracula for decades, since first edition, and I continue to wish it was a better game. It's about 2 hours of fun spread across 4 hours.

Today we got lucky and found Dracula in Rome early on, but he slipped away. When we finally cornered him again, he ambushed and gravely weakened our hunters with a New Vampire. They didn't have any juice left to take him out and he even managed to defeat Mina.

I think there are a few reasons why it differs. Qoto is a few versions behind default Mastodon. And this also allows for putting the followed stuff in other timelines, like in one of your own lists. I'm not sure default Mastodon can do this.
