@freemo @QOTO Is there a way to be notified when someone boosts something, not just when they toot?

Alternate universe where the '90s trend for calling things "bad", "sick" or "rude" never ended and now we compliment each other's shoes by calling them "catastrophic" and "fundamentally misaligned with my values"

@lucifargundam These are possibilities. Is the learning curve gentle?

What are the differences between the two? Is there a reason to choose one game over the other?

@antares I tried, but that definitely fell into the "getting a pilot's license" category. I don't want to do 20 hours of tutorials before I can have any fun. I mean, crikey, this "essential starter guide" is 9 pages long:

eurogamer.net/elite-dangerous-

Also, give me missions, not this open world "track the prices of 40 commodities across 200 star systems" stuff.

I really *wanted* to like Elite Dangerous, but obviously I had a bad experience.

What video game should I play?

Constraints:

- This will be on Windows.
- I'm particularly interested in either (a) a wargame that's about maneuvering my units rather than climbing a tech tree or diploming with seven other factions or (b) something where I'm operating a vehicle (car, spaceship, whatever) but that is easier than actually getting a pilot's license.
- I'm not interested in retro games.

Shout out to all the unsung heroes who keep running the things that we take for granted!

@jellycrystals I didn't find it frustrating, although of course your mileage may vary. There are many ways to solve each puzzle, and you feel clever when you find a particularly elegant one.

@richard_herron No, that includes scripting, filming, editing, etc. If you already have a planned lecture and are going to just record it I imagine it wouldn't be nearly that long.

@emmahunneyball @dria I've played it a couple of times and liked it. I wish there was a similar game on a different theme.

@inherentlee Not only is the all-lower-case version the first suggestion, but when I deliberately camel case, autocorrect overrides it!

Your link seems to just be a discussion of why there's no easy technical fix. What do you suggest we tell our mods "can be done"? Surely not manually editing every hashtag.

The bit about a lawyer being stopped from entering a music hall in the US because its facial recognition system picked up that she's part of a law company that's suing them is even crazier than I thought.

The law company isn't suing the music hall - it's suing a restaurant, in another state, which is owned by the hall's parent company MSG Entertainment. MSG gone ahead and harvested photos of all the lawyers in the firm and fed it to an image recognition system to ban them from every MSG Entertainment owned location.

People always tell me that if you've got nothing to hide then you've got nothing to fear. She's got nothing to hide and they still went after her.

If this doesn't start making people worried about facial recognition then there's serious trouble coming.

@Pat I can probably handle a bit more than that, but I have been known to enjoy a good car racing game.

1. Got groceries and moved some wood inside, so I'm ready for the storm.
2. Our copy of Votes for Women arrived.
3. Finally won a game of Mandala.

I *kind of* want to get immersed in an epic video game, but when I look at the dozens of controls and attributes, the sprawling tech trees and economies to manage, and the volumes of lore, I just ... *heavy sigh*.

Fare-free transit just makes sense. We want people on the bus or train instead of driving. So it should be the easy choice. No scrounging for cash or filling up a card, just hop on.

It's more sustainable, it reduces traffic deaths and air pollution, and it makes cities more livable to have fewer cars.

And: there's nothing radical about it. We've got free parking frickin' everywhere even though cities' costs to provide clean well-paved asphalt are far from free.
