My little news hack is to use text.npr.org - it’s the same U.S news without any fancy decoration or scripts. Check it out - it’s so fast and a reminder that the crapware you have to put up with slowing down the web is deliberate.

There once was a singer of old
Who broke away from the fold
He won't give you up,
And he won't let you down.
In a word, you have been Limerick-Rolled.

@ianrosewrites Agreed, but I'm also bummed that once it starts raining it won't stop for six months.

@hellomiakoda I'm enjoying Mark Kistler's "You Can Draw in 30 Days". It's a very gentle approach.

@a13cui@emacs.ch @xerz Yes, but (again, strictly theoretically) the infinite part is the only difference between a finite state machine and a Turing machine.

... which, yes, means that all actual, physical computers are technically finite state machines. They could solve any particular (decidable) problem if you added enough memory. By the same logic (and your dystopian setup), society could solve any decidable problem if there were enough people for that particular problem.

@a13cui@emacs.ch @xerz "You won't hit the end" isn't the same thing as "you have an infinite number of memory cells to play with". If you "wrap around", you're overwriting previous cells, so whatever was stored on them is gone.

7 billion cells is enough for many practical problems, but from a strict theoretical standpoint, it's a finite state machine.

@a13cui@emacs.ch @xerz Connecting the ends doesn't change that the tape has a finite number of cells.

@ZachWeinersmith In some years the English Scrabble champion is someone who doesn't speak the language but just memorized the dictionary.

@sdgathman @ambihelical @freemo @georgetakei RCV isn't impractical, and in fact has been implemented in several places including Alaska and Maine.

I like it because it would allow us to answer a question that can't be answered under plurality: did your third party lose because (a) a large number support you but were afraid to waste their votes, or (b) your views are only held by a small number of voters.

If by "voting for more than 1" you mean approval voting, I'd be okay with that, too. Also STAR voting. Any are better than plurality, but RCV seems to have the most momentum.

@Mrfunkedude Huh. I got one recently and don't find it very loud. (Is yours older?) Ironically, the ceiling fan noise keeps me awake.

@educoder That is a Grenade Squash. Once you pull it, you only have five seconds to eat it.

@RagingOwlbear The movie Awful Green Things was based on is my favorite badfilm. It's worth it for the opening theme alone:
