Let's get this November started!

🎉 ⁽ᴴᵉʳᵉ'ˢ ᵗᵒ ᵃⁿᵒᵗʰᵉʳ ʸᵉᵃʳ ᵒⁿ ᴹᵃˢᵗᵒᵈᵒⁿ⁾

We have a winner! Planetary Annihilation: TITANS. Clean interface and an outstanding tutorial that lets you do something satisfying in the first minute. Also runs just fine under Ubuntu.

Stellaris runs fine on Ubuntu, but the thought of learning to manage all this infrastructure, research, and diplomacy leaves me exhausted. I just want to maneuver fleets (space or wet navy) and see some pretty pyrotechnics.

I am once again asking for a 1X game.

Watcha got?

Happy Halloween 🎃

Here are the pumpkins I carved this year: An active red dwarf star and its gas giant planet. I call it an exo-pumkin.

I have never felt more respected or validated in my life than when I drove this onto the elementary school playground this morning

The original Grid racing game runs on Ubuntu, but the load times are appalling.

I tried ΔV: Rings of Saturn and ... I don't get it. There's brief tutorial on the controls, but when I'm told to return to the station ... what station? Where? Also, what am I trying to do? Do I just wander around this isotropic space collecting rocks? There seems to be a distinct lack of feedback on what I'm supposed to be doing and whether I'm succeeding.

The Steam reviews are Very Positive, so I must be missing something.

@vwbusguy FF would play the first Fast & Furious movie. RR would play a film S. S. Rajamouli made before he had the budget for RRR.

@drktbl This feels like overkill. My problem isn't that I'm trying to support many exotic platforms or controllers. I'm not even concerned about keeping track of which controller is which. My problem is that, within Unity, I set up one input to map to a particular button on the controller; then I plug literally the same controller into a different machine (admittedly with a different OS) and suddenly that input corresponds to a different button. At least once I restarted Unity and found that which stick on the gamepad was the X/Y axes had changed.

I continue to be astonished how often basic, used-in-thousands-of-games functionality doesn't work by default in Unity.

To answer your last question, old. I'm using the TopDown engine, which finds the new input system not "fully documented or stable":
