@nprandchill More specifically:
I'm person A, on server a. I follow person B on server b.
Clearly, I'll see B's posts in my Home timeline. I'm interested in this conversation. Perhaps I exchange messages with B.
But now person C (who I do not follow), on server c, replies to B, not tagging me.
How will I see C's reply without drinking from the firehose of the federated timeline?
The Guardian: Mastodon gained 70,000 users after Musk’s Twitter takeover. I joined them.

@rastinza It's a place to discover things, but the signal-to-noise ratio is low. There's also some really vile stuff in there if your instance has a loose federation policy.
@goeland86 Glad to see you're living the dream!
It might be a good idea to add #introduction #introductions and pin your post.
@BlackAzizAnansi Yes! #oregon has a wonderful vote-by-mail system.
@ezpy mastodon.art doesn't federate with qoto, because qoto "federates with instances that violate our ToS/CoC such as Gab, Kiwifarms.cc, freespeechextremist.com, etc."
As I understand it, "not federating" means:
- people on the different servers can't follow each other
- posts from one won't show up in the other's global timeline
You can still see posts on the other server by searching for hashtags, and you can still *subscribe* to people on the other one. I *think* this makes it impossible to have a conversation across non-federation border.
It's a bummer that I can't follow people on mastodon.art from #qoto (and I assume they can't follow me). Not quite enough to make me migrate yet because I can at least subscribe to them.
What is the best way to use Jupyter notebooks and Github? The diffs in the comments are barely readable, and I recall being some wah to handle it properly. Could somebody help me here?
