@ashwinvis I'm not familiar with Metnet.
uspol, voting, history
America has done some wonderful things and some terrible things, but perhaps our greatest accomplishment was the peaceful transfer of power after the 1800 election.
For me, the most patriotic holiday is election day, when (ideally) every American gets an equal say in determining the future of the nation. Yes, the system has flaws (e.g., the Electoral College), but it's a laudable ideal to strive for.
Hold your head high and cast your vote. You may not get all the outcomes you want, but neither will anyone else. The alternatives are much, much worse.
Every morning when #OPB comes on the radio and Casey Negreiff announces, "It's 6:01," I think, "... and half a dozen o' the other."
US Politics
@vwbusguy Vote to keep the fascists out. Even if the outcome is predictable in your race, make it a close loss or a landslide win.
It's also important to vote in local races. The congressional candidates of 10 years from now are running for major and state rep now.
A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.
Me: There's a concern that, with so many #MachineLearning PhDs being snapped up by industry, there won't anyone to train the next generation of researchers.
Colleague: I guess they'll just have to use .... unsupervised learning.

@treyhunner @chris @s_gruppetta I presume this feature was added so that programmers wouldn't have to think about the most efficient way of extending a list.
In the corner, the functional programming people are smugly examining their cuticles.
@undefined @treyhunner @chris @s_gruppetta This has implications beyond tuples. If `a` is a list and we
`b = a`
then
`a = a + ...`
does not modify `b` but
`a += ...`
does.
1. Got a good chunk of work done.
2. @htdrake singing.
3. Tried out Verdant, the latest addition to our collection of cozy #BoardGames.
@treyhunner @chris @s_gruppetta Ah, that explains it!
Definitely still odd.
@s_gruppetta @chris @treyhunner Fascinating!
I can imagine efficiency reasons for these being different.
It still seems wrong that __iadd__ for tuples makes a change and *then* throws an error. Is there a reason for this behavior?
Still one of the oldest #Python oddities I've ever seen 🐍🤔
>>> a = ([],)
>>> a[0] += ["what"]
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: 'tuple' object does not support item assignment
>>> a
(['what'],)
Note that an exception was raised but the operation also worked! 😳 #pythonoddity
@chris @treyhunner @s_gruppetta
It's weirder than that!
`a[0] = a[0] + ["what"]` reports the error but doesn't have the side effect.
`a[0] += ["what"]` reports the error and DOES have the side effect!
I'm shocked both that the failed assignment has a side effect and that these do not behave the same way. Can anyone explain?
@zleap @freemo @meeper @nova @sarvo @waifu I've generally found people ON qoto to be very friendly and supportive.
I was attacked a while ago by Nazis (literally, with swastikas in their profiles) from other servers that qoto federates with, but blocking a few of those servers myself seems to have solved the problem.
