Wow -- the first hit in a Qwant search for paypal was a paid ad for an obviously fraudulent site. (How do I know it's bogus? For one thing, this isn't a Windows machine.)

Does anyone have an ad-free search engine the like? I'd rather pay a subscription fee than have useful results buried in ads.

OUR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT CLASS WILL SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS

[Limited to the Portland, OR area. The semester is Jan-Apr 2024.]

Every year, students in the CS 488 Software Development course at Lewis & Clark College work in teams of 4-8 to build software for an external customer. That customer could be you!

Previous years' projects have included:

* A video game to teach people about earthquake preparedness.
* Creative animation software for an artist.
* A tool to help a faculty member organize course content.

Do you (or someone you know in a local organization) have a computational problem for which you need a piece of software? Let us know and maybe we can help you out.

WHAT YOU GET

Free custom software! This comes with some caveats:

* We usually produce stand-alone desktop applications. Other things are possible, but it's easiest to stay within this realm.
* These are mostly seniors working on their first large piece of software. We can make no guarantees as to quality; you might get something that you can use to do real work, but you might just get a fragile "proof of concept". We use an "agile" development technique that regularly reexamines goals, priorities, and expectations; this leads to a good probability that we'll have something working by the end of the semester, even if some of your more optimistic features have to be dropped.
* There probably won't be anyone to maintain your program after the semester is over. You might be able to hire some juniors to do more work on it.

WHAT YOU GIVE (We'll work with you on all of these things)

* Create an initial description of your project.
* Create and maintain a list of "user stories" (things that you want your program to do).
* Commit to meet [IN PERSON] with the students every other week to discuss progress and priorities. This must be a firm commitment; it's a disaster for the students if a customer flakes out.

Please DM me ASAP if you're interested!

[I normally teach this class, but as I'm on sabbatical it will be an adjunct this semester. I can put you in touch.]

Welcome to Mastodon! It's a laid back place. But here's a few simple rules you must follow:

1. List every politician you have ever voted for in your bio. This helps other users decide if they hate you.

2. Always use the hashtag #notcursed. Otherwise, we will assume you may bring great misfortune upon us all.

3. Never close the app. It is programmed to contact your local police station and report you for treason if you do.

4. Tell five of your friends to join. Yes, it's a pyramid scheme.

@TheVoidTLMB I've been doing Samoan fireknife and staff for a long time, so I've built up an immunity to fire. Juggling is hard, though, clubs harder, and torches even harder. At night, the bright flame makes it hard to see the flipping handle -- the part you're supposed to catch!

I saw a bumper sticker that just said "ASSHOLE". I don't know if they were self-identifying, accusing the reader, or simply labeling that part of the car.

Today's model from the origami fold-a-day calendar could become an xmas present, but who gives a flying duck?

Me: I’ve been bitten by a wolf!

Doctor: Where?

Me: No. Just a normal wolf.

Shot in the dark here: did you, or anyone you know, work at the #Harvard Office of Information Technology (#OIT) circa 1997-98, AKA When Everyone Quit At Once over the summer? (Before or after the quitting is fine.)

If so... I have some questions which you are probably no longer legally enjoined from answering! 🤣

I really wanted a better sense of how the current version of DALL-E (through GPT-4) works and what the limitations still are (because people keep telling me it's OMG SO AMAZING), and so I'm trying to use it to illustrate my "Twas the Night Before AI Bias" poem. Seemed like a decent test case.

Ask me how many times I have had to write "Can you please not make all the elves white?". Also, totally bizarrely, it insisted that it's incapable of illustrating elves without... wings. WINGS.

`@staticmethod` is (almost?) always wrong in #Python. It doesn't take the object's state as an argument, which means it's just a plain function. The class name is only used for namespacing, but modules already do this.

The only reason that I know of why people keep writing them is being taught Java's version of OOP too early too deeply. Java uses classes as a namespacing primitive.

@isagalaev ... and Java's static methods are more analogous to Python's class methods, right?

@lowqualityfacts Similar to the danger of maple trees exploding if the syrup pressure isn't released.
