I resent that my computer, the most complex and powerful machine I'll likely ever use, is turned on by some pissant little five-cent plastic button like it's a shitty VCR from the 90's. I want a massive ornate copper knife switch, as long as my forearm, with the lower position hand-lettered "HALT" and the engaged position labelled "COMPUTE." When I go to use my computer, I want it to know I MEAN it.

I've had a couple of blind students in the past. You might think, "great this stuff is all online, so it'll be easy to access!". Turns out ... not so much. https://www.washington.edu/accesscomputing/accesscsforall
tech privilige on mastodon
"if you don't like where you are, go make your own instance" is uncomfortably like "if you don't like your neighbourhood, build a house somewhere else" -- it presumes a whole shitload of privilege and resources.
Instead, it's much better to point people to the list of instances, e.g. the list of essentially free housing they can trivially move to. Just think before you say "just do [enormously difficult technical thing] lmao" like it's eating ice cream.

Greetings!
My two current interdisciplinary research projects involve using deep learning to analyze photographs of clouds and building a video game to teach people about the looming Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. Previously I've done work on computer Go and computer science education.
In my spare time I play board games and fire dance (Samoan fireknife and staff). I have a dog of unknown provenance who resembles a miniature German Shepherd.
CS professor, game designer, and fire dancer ordinaire.
