Hi there! This is ACM, the world's largest computing society. As you might have noticed, we have opened not only our official #Mastodon account but also our own #instance!

Please consider joining @mastodon.acm.org, a community for #computing researchers & practitioners to connect & exchange ideas with each other, whether you are an ACM member or not.

Wednesday, eps 1-2

Meh. It looks like a standard "a bunch of kids solve the mystery of the previous generation" plot, with excessive helpings of "milk the franchise" and "have the star deliver deadpan, macabre one-liners that will look good in the trailer or become gifs".

Jenny Ortega does her job well, but the writers seem to be phoning it in. The roommate, especially, comes across as "young person written by an old person".

Nice to see Gwendoline Christie given an opportunity to try something new.

Using #vim is easy once you learn a few basic keybindings.

h and l - move left and right
j and k - move down and up
η and λ - move backwards and forwards through time
ξ and κ - translation through additional temporal dimension (if applicable)
ᚻ, ᛄ, ᚳ and ᛚ - moving left, down, up, and right through celestial spheres
𐤄 and 𐤋 - switch deity to pantheon member to left or right
ᛄ - supplicate to chosen deity
ᚳ - challenge chosen deity (dangerous)
:q - exit

Good morning on another day in the zone between "everything is fine" and "we are doomed for sure."

Good morning on another day where, in the spirit of complex systems, what you do shapes the future.

When I try to drag a file into the Project window of a JetBrains IDE (IntelliJ, PyCharm, etc.), I invariably get this message this first time. It always works the second time.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

1. Had the last class meeting of the year.
2. Only one student (across three classes) lived the dream of sleeping through their final presentation.
3. Grades for one class are turned in.

#2710 Hydropower Breakthrough

A hydroelectric dam is also known as a heavy water reactor.

it’s hard to believe that in this day and age people are still wearing fir

What if we could make Eliza really, really believable by lighting a coal mine on fire.

I don't know exactly how I'll be using Mastodon just yet, but here's an intro: Hi, I'm Celeste! I'm an environmental seismologist, mostly specializing in seismic signals generated by glacier processes. I'm currently a postdoctoral fellow at UCalgary, which I started after finishing my PhD at Caltech in June. I sometimes take cool pictures in the field as Queen Elsa for fun and for outreach, like this one near my current field site in British Columbia:

Some of you will know that there are character codes which are magic, For example, 8 is backspace, 9 is tab, 13 is enter/return, 27 is escape.

And then there's 127, which is delete. Why?

Because if you're dealing with punched cards, you need to remove errors. And the only code which will work for cancelling out a column is all holes punched, since you can't un-punch a hole

And 127 in binary is `01111111`.

I would love to see tv and film that explores what Native life was like here *before* white people arrived

1. Progress on nuclear fusion.
2. Final presentations for a second class done.
3. A couple of alumnae dropped by to tell me about their jobs, which had them bringing their own bat-sniffing dogs.

I just keep stumbling onto higher ed memes that need to be shared today.
