I can't believe they're launching a new dinosaur movie (65) and they didn't take the opportunity to put the feathers on.

Public transport isn't supposed to make money. It's not even supposed to break even. It's supposed to lose money and to be financed and extended from general taxes because it gives back way more than mere money.

And all the politicians know this because they keep building and maintaining streets for free

@peterdrake came home early today so we could learn Near and Far and give it a try. He even built a fire for ambiance.

It's great! The art design is beautiful. The rules are clearly written with an excellent index. There's a bit of setup, but the pace was snappy and it didn't take as long as I feared it might.

Even though Peter trounced me 59 vs. 24 thanks to TWO completed trade routes, better artifacts, and faster camp building, I'm really excited to play the full Campaign game.

The game at the top of "The Hotness" on BoardGameGeek is now Brass: Birmingham.

It dethroned Gloomhaven, which still sits at #2. #3 is the sequel, Frosthaven.

#4 is ... Sail? A game with 5 ratings? What's going on here?

I have mixed feelings about the Wingspan Nesting Box. It is beautiful and compact, but I think it also nudges me against playing. It’s a bit of a production to pull the giant, heavy chest out of our game cabinet, find enough space to open it up, and dig through all the bits to grab what I want for a particular play. I’m not giving up on it yet. But I have, more than once, thought about putting everything back into their own expansion boxes…

@pluralistic here in Iceland, we log in to the tax office website, check that the details are correct, update if necessary, and then submit. The site not only has a built-in error checker, it also gives you a preliminary breakdown of your tax liabilities and (re)payment schedule. Even if you're doing complex things like trading stocks, getting dividends from foreign companies, etc, it's barely any work at all.

(Former computer Go researcher here, cited in the original AlphaGo paper.)

A lot of people are saying that the recent human victory in Go highlights a fundamental flaw in things like ChatGPT, which are trained on human-generated data. There are a few problems with this claim:

1) While AlphaGo was initially trained on human data, its stronger descendants AlphaGo Zero and AlphaZero were not; they were simply given the rules and derived their strategies from self-play. (I don't know about KataGo and LeelaZero mentioned in the article.) I would be interested to know if this exploit works against such programs.

2) The exploit was discovered with a lot of computational power. While a human can carry out the plan, it's not like a human just directly used their "intuition" or "creativity" to out-think the computer.

3) Saying that ChatGPT has "weaknesses" is vastly overestimating ChatGPT. It doesn't do any reasoning or have an internal model of the world, flawed or otherwise. It is simply, as someone quipped, "spicy autocorrect".

Just learned set theory and I cannot contain myself.

@peterdrake really likes Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix and I really don't. With two, I have too many cards in my hand to process. With six, there's too much randomness and risk of not even finishing.

He stomped me in the first race, taking 1, 2, 3. But by our third race I managed to (a) make him overpay for his cars, (b) buy pole position and thus the winner's circle, and (c) make him frown in concentration several times. Moral victory.

Drove past a sign for a "French Immersion School" and wondered why they didn't just say "French Dip".

Overheard: "We're gonna die because I don't wanna cook and I hate eating food!"

A friend of student, working at a gas station, reported that on several different occasions, people had pulled in for help because their car was on fire.

They thought, "In this situation, you should go ANYWHERE OTHER THAN A GAS STATION!"

A scented candle that smells like a combination of victory and whatever The Rock is cooking.
