A quick reminder that the six-part podcast I did to promote my book Everybody Wins exists, discussing the evolution of modern board games with guests including Ian Livingstone, Reiner Knizia and Matt Leacock. All episodes here: podcasters.spotify.com/pod/sho

Last year the world built more new solar capacity than every other power source combined.

If growth continues at the current rate solar capacity will be larger than the combined total of coal, gas, nuclear and hydro by 2031.

A collection of subtle mechanics to make movement feel better:
1. The player slides around corners, if they would hit their head against the ceiling by just a few pixels.
2. When pressing jump just before hitting the ground, it will be executed upon landing
3. A small window after losing the ground beneath your feet still allows you to jump
4. The player scales small height differences automatically; which is important since you can create a platform yourself #gamedev #pixelart

me greeting my fellow working class Brits at the pub: "Oi! Polloi!"

most cultures have some number they use as linguistic shorthand for "a lot"

Chinese tends to use "ten thousand," as in "the journey of ten thousand li"

modern US ppl often say "a million" or "a billion," like "there were, like, a million people there, it was so crowded"

every bit of evidence we have points to the ancient Hebrews using "forty," as in "it rained for forty days and forty nights" or "they wandered in the desert for forty years"

Are people in the #ComputerScience community thinking of organized responses to the anti-trans legislation in Florida, Texas and elsewhere in the US? There's the new "bathroom" law in Florida, which will force trans people to use the wrong (and unsafe) restrooms in government buildings, including state universities.

Perhaps @ACM, @ieee_bot and other professional societies should cease hosting conferences in states that have passed anti-trans legislation?

really appreciate everyone who shared what they found confusing -- people's feedback about what they personally found confusing is always SO much more useful than guesses ("I think a beginner might find X confusing”) or suggestions ("you should change X to make it clearer”).

It turns out that most people are pretty bad at guessing what a beginner might find confusing (I'm bad at it too! that's why I'm asking!), but people are VERY good at knowing what they personally are confused by

In college, I took a class called The Letters of Paul. I took it for two very good reasons:

1. I was (and am) named Paul.
2. The prof was (and is) cool.

I didn’t figure it was an especially practical course. It was for fun, for the challenge, for the cultural knowledge, for the pleasure of doing it.

Hello, I'm attempting to setup #StardewValley to work with my screen-readers. Depending on which one works better with a particular piece of software, I switch between #JAWS & #NVDA. Does anyone on here, know how to set the game up correctly, using mods?

I couldn't convince ChatGPT that the capital of West Virginia is Huntington (it's not, it's Charleston), until I told it to check wv.gov (which of course it cannot do), which caused it to finally concede the point.

Consider this your periodic reminder that ChatGPT doesn't "think" anything but is just completing sentences with statistically-likely conclusions.

I mean yeah we can hang out but I’m gonna wear headphones

What could Google have been thinking when it started selling dot-zip top-level domain names. This is such a terrible idea that you have to wonder whether something beyond stupid is involved..

In any case, you should NEVER, EVER click on a URL that ends in .zip.
