Look how deep the NYT buried the lede in this #Portland article 💀

First you hear from a downtown business owner saying "there’s no point calling the cops".

Then you hear from a cop on how he polices drug users (while remaining silent on how he polices drug dealers).

Then you hear from a homeless drug user who is desperate for help.

Then FINALLY you hear from a TREATMENT CENTER DIRECTOR that points out: "You just can’t skip [the residential treatment] step and expect people to be successful".

The existence of draft horses strongly implies the existence of Final FINAL rev1 (copy) (backup) FINAL3 dot horses.

@blogdiva The one statistic I keep returning to is this one:

No Democratic Presidential candidate has received a majority of the white vote since the 60s. (Since the Civil Rights act and realignment of the parties.)

Not one. Not any of them.

None.

Even in the last election, which was the easiest election to make the easiest choice and they failed.

It's why suppressing the black vote is so key to these assholes. Black people understand the assignment. Everyone understands the assignment.

Just not white people. So terrified of the "other" they'll feed their kids to the machine rather than lifting up everyone.

It's frustrating as hell.

My two feats of gaming this month were: (1) playing Nemesis for the first time and (2) playing all of the O games we own for our #BoardGamesAtoZ challenge. Even, shudder, Ogre. Twice, no less.

Burn the Fort is a new board game (now fully funded) created by Klee Benally, a Diné (Navajo) game designer.

It's a historical game of Indigenous resistance, where players are in semi-coop to push back Manifest Destiny colonizers, who have built a military installation on their land.

Players will attack wagons and supply lines, sabotage the train, and destroy the fort.

It's a resistance game in the vein of Bloc by Bloc and is on Gamefound now. gamefound.com/projects/indigen

All of our Unity bugs seems to be race conditions. With a thousand layers of event-driven lasagna, it's almost impossible to ensure that one line of code will run before another.

I have closed Twitter and deleted the app from my phone. Now I need recommendations on who to follow here. I am interested in #climate, #energy, #airquality, #sustainabledevelopment

I have a Windows box that I use pretty much only for gaming. I'll be working from home for the next year (sabbatical), so I plan to use this machine rather than my less powerful MacBook Pro.

Windows is not suitable for actual work, so in one week I plan to install Ubuntu (dual boot).

One of the creepier tech-related incidents I remember was many years ago when I wanted the Sam's Photofacts (a third-party creator of device specs and schematics, etc.) for a very old portable TV. Way out of date, but I was trying to help someone with it.

I mentioned to a friend that I was looking for old Photofacts, but I did not say anything about the TV. He scribbled an address on a scrap of paper, an address locally here in L.A. "Try him," he muttered.

I drive over. It's a small unmarked storefront. I go in, the bell on the door rings. Sitting inside, like the caterpillar in "Alice in Wonderland", is this little guy perched on a stool, with immense stacks of paper surrounding him everywhere. Total mayhem.

I walk up to him -- knowing that this was a waste of time and really wanting to get out of there -- and asked if he had the Sam's Photofacts for that specific very old TV model.

Without saying a word, he reached over to the pile of papers right next to him, took the TOP item off the pile, and silently handed it to me. It was the ancient one I needed. Stunned, I paid him the amount marked on the item, and left with it, not completely sure what had just happened.

When I drove by there a month later that storefront was something else entirely. He was gone.

It's odd that we call it all cutlery when in fact only the knives are cutlery. The spoons are scooplery and the forks are stablery.

Here’s some wee 330 million year old crinoid ossicles that wonderfully illustrate their five-fold radial symmetry. Nature is awesome 🖤 #ScottishFossils #ScottishGeology

"Everyone needs to touch the stove"

Happy to tell them it is hot. And how heat works. Ways to identify and avoid touching hot stoves.

But 99.99% of that will be ignored.

Until they touch the stove, scream in agony, and out of their own will and insight, re-stumble upon a thing that was said to them a dozen times. But now they are seeing it with fresh eyes.

Even then, they'll understand 20% and fill in the rest with some batshit theory of their own. Which is a vast improvement!

One of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS your city could do to become more healthy, sustainable, livable, affordable, equitable, successful — stop pretending to “balance” transportation modes, and commit to PRIORITIZING walking/rolling, biking, public transit. HT @dublincycling’s graphic
