Showed up for the second day to start the trial and ... immediate mistrial. Apparently the defendant stepped outside yesterday, was overcome by the heat, and went to the hospital. They'll be all right, but are in no shape for a trial. They'll find a new jury when they reschedule. #JuryDuty
The winners of this year's Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest (which challenges entrants to come up with the worst possible opening sentence for a novel) have been posted:
Minor #Python gotcha that a lot of people fall afoul of:
if my_dict["my_key"]:
pass
If my_key does not exist in the dictionary, this will raise a KeyError exception. The use of the [] part of the dictionary implies a direct lookup of the key inside the dictionary. Which may or may not exist.
Use either (preferred):
if "my_key" in my_dict:
or
if my_dict.get("my_key"):
#Violet, a dog covered in fur (some of it black), wants to hang out on the 100℉ back porch in the hope that a free-range deep-fried squirrel will drop into her mouth.
Qwirkle is another rainbow of a game, slightly simpler than Ingenious, but with the same arithmetic gymnastics as you try figure out how to maximize your own points while blocking your opponent. @peterdrake scored 2 of the 10 six-tile bonuses this evening to win handily.
I like the rainbow patterns and hefty wooden pieces. The drawstring bag that came with the game did not wear well, so I made a much nicer one to replace it.
Me: All these "wait for a couple of frames" delays we've duct taped to our game can't possibly be the right solution.
Tutorial by a professional: Now we add in a special value "just in case there is a physics hiccup that might make the Projectile appear to not move in the first frames".
In many parts of the US there is no where teens can hang out without spending money. My South Bronx neighborhood probably beats many cities, suburbs and small towns. (we have a skate park, and a larger park with benches-- though could use more options, for example a nicer library for kids who don't like noise)
In some towns libraries ban "teens congregating" playgrounds are out of bounds & groups of teens get the cops called on them.
This is the real reason young people don't go out anymore.
Tidbits from #JuryDuty orientation:
You can use the bathroom even during the orientation. You won't miss anything because there are speakers in there.
You can get a letter verifying your service for your employer or *spouse*. "Jury duty my ass, Harold, you were out with that floozy again!"
Apparently there's a problem with jurors telling the judge (of whom they're afraid), "Yes, I can serve that long," then coming back to the waiting room and stage-whispering to a clerk, "not really".
The coffee shop in the courthouse is called "Starting Grounds". I'm Not a Lawyer[tm], but I think a better name would be "Grounds for Dismissal". #JuryDuty
It is possible and easy to recognize the limitations and insufficiency of electoral politics and still use voting as one action among many to facilitate change.
Listen to what black people and queer people are saying.
I roll my eyes when the *only* response people have to injustice is "Vote!1!" I roll my eyes more at the idea that not voting is some big brain 5D chess radical move that lets you operate outside the system.
Use every lever of power you can reach. Every single one.
Solution to the Ubuntu terminal not accepting ctrl-c and ctrl-v for copy and paste?
Just change the shortcuts in Terminal > Preferences > Shortcuts.
Still need to send an actual ctrl-c to the terminal? Use ctrl-shift-c.
