#xenolinguistics

Found skulking across the back yard with a bird in her mouth again. Either she's figured out how to catch them or she's getting very lucky about them falling out of the sky.

(I don't know if I can tag #catsofmastodon or is that reserved for your own cats?)

I'm working through the "Space SHMUP" tutorial from Bond's excellent "Introduction to Game Design, Prototyping, and Development (Third Edition)". I've spent quite a few hours on this and am ready to test the fancy shields on Enemy 4.

When I run the game and fire, the projectile hits the shield and ... Unity crashes.

No error message, no bug report pop-up. It just dies. This happens consistently.

I don't see how I can make progress from here. Any ideas?

People who have used Godot: is it more stable?

So, is essentially going to start charging developers for even pirated copies of their games?

They did not think this through at all. Officially going to start recommending to my clients that they abandon Unity with due haste.

Remember kids, the most carbon-neutral tech product is the one you already own.

Does Unity save your changes?

In a scene: No, you have to explicitly save. Also, changes you make while the game is running are undone when the run ends.

In a prefab: Yes, silently.

Unity updates pricing model to something astoundingly confusing, requiring payments *per user install* blog.unity.com/news/plan-prici

Game developers, unshockingly, thoroughly confused and upset forum.unity.com/threads/unity-

Remember that Unity is now owned by a company that makes malware, and whether or not you're upset about this change to their pricing model, remember that the next update could be even worse.

Also remember that if you are starting a new project, you could be using Godot instead, which is awesome: godotengine.org/

Sorry to all the indie game devs out there affected by this though. :(

"Awake(), Start(), Update() and other built-in Monobehaviour methods are scripted in a special manner so that--unlike standard methods in C# class inheritance--you don't need to use the ... override keyword."

Because of course they are.

Hey, I'm still looking for a living kidney donor. Even if you can't donate yourself, can you please boost this to increase my chances? This is the link to my website which details my story. Thanks, in advance!

Ashoka addresses important questions like:

What if Kate McKinnon was Billie Eilish?

What if Easter Island was Mordor?
