I understand what it means to FOLLOW someone, but what does it mean to SUBSCRIBE to them (by clicking on the little RSS logo)?

When does a joke become a dad joke?

When it's full groan.

When I joined #mastodon, I just wanted an open-source #twitter clone.

I got more than that. Subtle design differences made for healthier conversations in ways I wasn't expecting.

Here's a blog post to try to capture those differences and why they matter. scott.mn/2022/10/29/twitter_fe

I couldn't find a good reference diagram of the relationships between types, so a while ago I made one.

1. Won Fury of Dracula.
2. Mystery Rummy with @htdrake
3. Was able to get same-day delivery on a new cable modem -- and even get it working!

We've been playing Fury of Dracula for decades, since first edition, and I continue to wish it was a better game. It's about 2 hours of fun spread across 4 hours.

Today we got lucky and found Dracula in Rome early on, but he slipped away. When we finally cornered him again, he ambushed and gravely weakened our hunters with a New Vampire. They didn't have any juice left to take him out and he even managed to defeat Mina.

I think there are a few reasons why it differs. Qoto is a few versions behind default Mastodon. And this also allows for putting the followed stuff in other timelines, like in one of your own lists. I'm not sure default Mastodon can do this.

Hmm, that's odd. If I click on the hashtag in the quoted toot, it doesn't find the quoted toot! Can anyone explain what's going on?

(This was true before I quoted the toot, so that's not the issue.)

1. Feeling much better physically.
2. Violet got to attend Zoom meetings with students (and, not being aware of this fact, was very relaxed).
3. A fire in the fireplace.

You know how most people just have one phone number?

That's possible because all phone providers in the world federate together. No matter which provider you use, you can call anyone anywhere.

Well, Mastodon (and the Fediverse it's a part of) is the same thing but for social media. The Fediverse address on your profile is enough for people on other servers to follow you and interact with you. It looks like this:

@ (username) @ (server)

There's a video about it here:

framatube.org/w/9dRFC6Ya11NCVe

A sincere tip for longtime fediverse people who would like their friends to stick around here longer than a week:

If you're on Mastodon or Hometown, you can click the "bell" icon in the profile of someone you follow. This will make it so that every time they post, it will appear in your notifications like an "@". I am enabling this temporarily for friends so that I remember to interact with them. This is important for making this place feel more lively and helps people stick around!

If you're wanting a simple quick way to explain how Mastodon works, there's an official animation from a few years ago which goes over the general principles. Here's a copy of it someone uploaded to the Fediverse:

tilvids.com/w/hRzMpJwSkqEK3ZTN

The original video is on YouTube if you prefer that:

youtube.com/watch?v=IPSbNdBmWK

The principles explained in the video also apply to the whole Fediverse that Mastodon is part of: many servers talking to each other to form a single network.

A problem in teaching with interactive notebooks (e.g., ): students tell me, "I typed exactly what you did, and mine doesn't work." Now, sometimes it's not *exactly* the same (e.g., = vs == or the wrong kind of brackets).

Other times it *is* the same, but they had previously run some erroneous code that redefined some function or variable. Perhaps they redefined max to be a specific list rather than the built-in functions that returns the largest element in a list.

That code is no longer in the notebook since they edited it trying to fix their mistake. Restarting the runtime environment usually fixes this, but it's a nasty issue to track down.

The different feeds can get a lil confusing, so here is a graphic explaining what makes up each of the three home, local, and federated timelines (2/3)
