This ultra-small generator is highly portable and works even with shallow, slow moving water. Already tested with powering street lights, it promises to allow people in the world’s remote regions to generate their own electricity

What's the story here? A strange way to get high? Making explosives? Keeping open the option to reattach anything that was shaved off?
Dragons are real. And they live in the ocean.
Blue Glaucus or “the blue dragon” is a brightly colored nudibranch. They incorporate toxic chemicals & stinging cells from prey into their skin as a defense against predation.
And in my humble opinion, it’s more spectacular than anything ever imagined in Westeros. #science #nature
The first thing to understand is that in the USA, 60% of all Black men in college will drop out.😢
The primary reason for dropping out is not grades. It is financial hardship. This is true for students of all races. Not all poor students are Black, but in the US, most Black college students are poor.
You can ask a US college student 2 questions:
1) Are you rich?
2) Is your family rich?
If the answers are "No" and "No," there is a very good chance that this student will not graduate college.
A nice talk on automating game testing from the 2019 Game Developers Conference.
@htdrake will pass on this one, but I'm going to seize the #BoardGamesAToZ opportunity to play the Arkham Horror card game. #BoardGames #AkhamHorror
An image search shows that there are (at least) two completely different Model-View-Controller patterns out there.
In one, the model is an intermediary between the view (which displays things) and the controller (which receives user input).
In another, the controller is an intermediary between the view (which interacts with the user) and the model (which stores data).
I'm doing #ungrading again.
Because I can't realistically keep a sense of the progress of each of 50+ students in my head, I give a number for each assignment:
0: Turned in nothing or a blank document.
1: Significantly incomplete.
2: Basically complete. For programming assignments, passes all unit tests.
3: Above and beyond -- perhaps tackled an optional challenge problem.
Several 0s and 1s indicate a problem to be addressed. 2 is by far the most common result. If a student wants to argue for an A, they should have a few 3s.
**The question: should I show these numbers to the students?**
Pro: It give them a sense of how they're doing, and therefore how much energy they need to allocate to this class.
Con: They will look at the number, think of it as a "grade", and pay no attention to written feedback.
Thoughts?
Tech kvetch
I'm giving students permission to register for my class even though it's over the original capacity. We (barely) have enough room to squeeze these nine more into the lab, so that's not a problem.
Using our (fortunately soon-to-be-replaced) system, each one requires FIFTEEN mouse clicks or hotkey presses.
No, there is no way to do this in bulk.
Am I spending longer complaining about it than the actual task will take? Sure. BUT STILL.
💔 RIP Ken Block, killed yesterday in a snowmobile accident. His Gymkhana Five is one of the greatest videos showing off the sights and streets of San Francisco.
