We played the "learning scenario" of BattleLore. @htdrake won, but we're both a bit mystified as to how; she rolled worse (as is her wont), lost more figures, and didn't feel that she knew what she was doing.

She expressed that wargames are more frustrating than economic eurogames, because you're losing things rather than building them. It strikes me that Go straddles this in an interesting way: beyond a certain skill level, players can see trouble coming and avoid actual capture. There's even a Go proverb, "big groups don't die". That said, strong Go players play at the razor's edge of their abilities, so occasionally something big does die.

It’s very funny to me that the dominant Twentieth Century conception of AI was a slightly awkward nerd with an inhuman mastery of facts and logic, when what we actually got is smooth-talking bullshit artists who can’t do eighth-grade math.

When I post a mastodon link elsehwere (e.g., in an email signature), which should I use? Why?

@doot A cat goes to the vet. The cat says "meow". The vet says "yes, but where?"

I finally got around to reading @pluralistic's essay on why the internet is getting noticeably worse:

pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/pot

The long essay is worth a read, but handily the TLDR is in the first paragraph:

"Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

#TomBaker was my intro to #DoctorWho and his portrayal and storylines are still some of my favorites. Happy birthday, my Doctor.

So much for the "rodents don't like capsaicin" theory.

@htdrake reports that a squirrel knocked down our suet holder, opened it, and ran off the the block of "hot pepper suet".
