so much of the current discourse around AI depends on a naive essentialism about concepts. as if there's a fact of the matter about what "AGI", "world model", etc. mean.

there is no hard threshold models are going to cross whereupon consciousness suddenly blooms and a distinct and clear self/world boundary emerges.

we are tagging a high-dimensional space with fairly arbitrary low-dimensional linguistic markers. as always, the map is not the territory

This guy updated his LinkedIn profile with a prompt injection attack to catch lazy recruiters that are just having ChatGPT write a “personalized” introduction. His example he generated himself, but someone is going to be caught by this in the wild.

In completely silly but wonderful AI news, the 11-yo has a small-stakes assignment in his writing class where he picks an image & free writes something based on it. For the past week I’ve been using Stable Diffusion to create funny/weird/absurd images (e.g. “a dragon driving a convertible down a sunny highway” or “a mouse wizard casting a spell”) for him to use & he has been loving it. His mini stories have been delightful.
