The New York Times is known for their groundbreaking #dataviz but what I really admire is how they have refined the basics to an exquisite level.

Look at this simple bar #chart:

- Category labels in bars
- Dual tints in each bar
- Bold text for the two leaders
- Right alignment of values and their title
- Elegant fine horizontal lines
- Enlightening annotation
- Medium grey for source

So clear yet few achieve this level of polish.

I recently received my annual letter from Elsevier for a book that I published 10 years ago <https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-94-007-7223-6>. Royalties were insufficient to write a check to me, but Elsevier still sells the book for 118 Euros, and includes it in their library book packages. Tell me again why I published it with a big publisher instead of posting it for free on the Internet so my colleagues could benefit from it?

This is a nice race to follow: the evolution of carbon intensity of electricity.
Before 2010 Denmark and the Netherlands were still higher than world average. Then from 2010 Denmark got serious about decarbonising. In the Netherlands we waited until 2018 but we are finally reducing it quickly!
In 2022 it was lower than Germany for the first time. Germany's carbon intensity increased in the last 2 years.
Still a long way to go to reach France and Sweden in the bottom.
Final goal 0!

We've tried dragging a dog bed outside, for a softer spot with less risk of ear splinters, but I think she enjoys living on the edge.
