It drives me up the wall when people argue “Europe was built before cars" as a reason Europeans can support biking better than the US. On its face it doesn't make sense—we have *much* wider roads to reclaim for better uses, for instance. More, it’s ahistorical—many European cities were taken over by cars before they reclaimed space. I refuse to bow to the nihilism. I will not accept doom as an inevitability that cannot be averted. I see no point in it. I understand that some people are just out of energy and out of ability to hope or to help. That makes me feel that it’s even more important that while I have hope I hold onto it and express it so that others who still do know that they aren’t alone and we can get together and do what we can to keep the lights on and the darkness at bay.
