Any folks have suggestions on how to take pictures of distant birds without spending a huge amount on it?

Not looking to become a professional wildlife photographer, just to have some identifiable pictures of the birds I've seen.

I have a Canon T4i, but I'd probably be as happy or happier to just get a little clip-on telephoto lens for my phone if a decent one exists.

@pganssle if you're looking for price-reducing options, I would say have you considered reflex lenses? You get much greater focal length for the money. Pros and suburbanites with plenty of disposable income typically have a bias towards only buying Canon & Nikon lenses, but that's genuinely just marketing. There's nothing wrong with Tamron / Sigma.

— and mirror optics demonstrably work fine for telescopes, so there's no sense in disparaging them here on Earth.

@n8 Interesting, that one hadn't come up.

I am leaning towards getting a "superzoom" camera like a Sony DSC-HX90V or a Nikon P900 as @eric suggested, but reflex lenses do look quite inexpensive.
