It’s happening. My son (14) tells me that one of his classmates suddenly realized in school this morning that he must give a presentation he should have prepared. He quickly got #ChatGPT to do it, presented the result in class and got the top mark.
Comparing to myself as a schoolboy: I once had to read out a homework essay in class which I hadn’t done. So I opened my exercise book and pretended to read, whilst just making it all up. At the end of class, after others had had their turns, the teacher said she liked my essay and would like me to read it again. Perhaps she suspected something?
So I „read“ it again from memory. The teacher was satisfied!
@ketchup71 @rahmstorf Sounds neither shoddy nor too late: the ability to extemporize an essay on the spot means he knew the material thoroughly. It's like a primary school equivalent of a Viva Voce; what you do to defend a graduate-level or better thesis.
@pieist @rahmstorf Yes, you can see it this way.
However, an essay whipped up without any research *tends* to be shoddy (I know, some people think when they just stand there and wow the crowds with a smart performance it is enough, but be honest, this is usually fluff and entertainment), and it technically is too late, because he was expected to give his presentation at any point starting at the begin of class.
Anyway, my point is: It’s *still* not cheating. 😃
