With Mastodon it takes about 10 seconds to add a link to an official website, add verification to a Mastodon profile, and make it easy for users to verify the account of any user.

It does suppose that everyone is clear on what constitutes an official site.
For example, the domain clarencethomas.net is devoted to criticism of Clarence Thomas, and was certainly not registered by him. The person who operates that site could use it to create an "official" Mastodon presence for Clarence Thomas. Which would be fine by me but you see what I'm getting at.
