The FAA Grounded Every Single Domestic Flight in the U.S. While It Fixed Its Computers // Reason not yet disclosed, but reportedly *not* a cyberattack. Software upgrade gone wrong? Floppy disk worn out? Tripped over an extension cord? - L // https://gizmodo.com/flights-faa-grounds-all-domestic-us-notice-air-missions-1849973999
@lauren People think you're joking about the floppy disk but.... ;-)
@TamarYellin I'm absolutely not kidding!
@lauren @TamarYellin load-bearing 5.25” floppy drive
@lauren @AustinB @TamarYellin Ah yes, the old S-100 bus system with dual 8" floppies and a Z80 CPU. But the big question is: MP/M or TurboDos?
@lauren @AustinB @TamarYellin My first real job out of university: developing a remote monitoring and billing system for video game console leasing companies (think Pac Man, Space Invaders). They gave me a Prime One that they'd got in an acquisition and expected me to use it. I quietly developed it on a Northstar Horizon instead. When I demoed it I had the Prime spinning its magtapes demonstratively while the Northstar did the actual work.
@pieist @AustinB @TamarYellin We'll need to have separate thread on the ins and outs of demos.
@pieist @AustinB @TamarYellin I've still got mine -- IMSAI. Would be very careful about powering it up though, given those big power supply caps!
