@DavidMHarlan @pieist I swiped all kindsa writing moves from harlan Ellison. He was at the clarion writer's workshop where I was a student in my youth, he was there for a week. But mostly I absorbed stuff by reading him. He was briefly my mentor, then I got mad at him, then he got mad at me, then we had a feud, then we were friends again, then he died.

Of course eventually you get past "dated" and back into something wonderful. Most of Poul Anderson and Larry Niven feel dated to me. But Bester and Van Vogt and Eric Frank Russell just feel fresher and newer than ever.
@pieist @DavidMHarlan I didn't read enough Eric Frank Russell. Bester and Van Vogt very powerful writers in their way. Jack Vance--his style was wonderful but never influenced me personally but just his ideas and the way he uses them and the way he handled imagery. He had a dark side but boy he was an important sff writer. Niven was quite a modernist writer in his time, weirdly enough. Almost New Wave at first. I hope to see him on March 19 at the paperback show in Glendale.
