From 1795 through 1956, US currency had the national motto, "E Pluribus Unum,” which means, “From Many, One.” In 1956, it was changed to, “In God We Trust,” for the Cold War and to somehow magically defeat godless Communism. We need to lose some god and gain some pride again.

@Sundae_Gurl It was around the same time (and also signed into law by Eisenhower) that "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance.
