There have been other groups who re-invented the dehumidifier, claimed that it could solve the world's water shortage problems, and sought crowdfunding to market it. They were at best dumb projects, at worst outright scams. Is this any better?

Not a scam while it is just a student project at MIT. I may be if it becomes a crowfund project...

That said, MIT includes the MIT Media Lab which hosts a cryptocurrency project. (And google "Joi Ito" "Jeff Epstein" together.) Silvio Micali, a CS prof at MIT, created his own cryptocurrency.
So I don't think that MIT is immune to scams itself...
